+borisovbunch
I just purchased the garmin etrex 20 and want to start geocaching. I have downloaded many caches, but when I try navigate, the map isn't very detailed. How do you see a more detailed map with driving directions???? Quote Link to comment
Fangamon
Yep and you thought that it wouldn't cost you any more money, WRONG! Quote Link to comment

+Chrysalides
OpenStreetMaps (free) may have driving directions for your area, but I've never found driving directions on the handhelds to be particularly useful. I much prefer a Nuvi for driving instructions - easier to see, spoken directions, and safer to use. Edited August 19, 2014 by Chrysalides Quote Link to comment

Fangamon
http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=324839 Ultimately if you want really good maps with directions then in most cases you will have to purchase a commercially made map. They are expensive but they work well and should last the life of the unit. I have Garmin's Topo, Bluechart and City Navigator on my Etrex 20 and Nuvi. They cost a bit but worth it if you have to rely on area specific data. I also have OSM and Tracks4... as well but I usually rely on the 'HERE' maps if I need accuracy. Free is OK but 'paid for' is reliably better... Edited August 21, 2014 by Odourless Quote Link to comment
+Chrysalides
Instead of paying for City Navigator maps, I'd suggest getting a Nuvi with Lifetime Map Updates. Like I said earlier, it is MUCH better for driving, and it doesn't cost a lot more if you shop around and / or get refurbished Nuvis. Quote Link to comment
+Chrysalides
Today's (Aug 21 Central Time) Woot deal is a refurbished Nuvi 40LM (lifetime maps) for $55 shipped in case anyone is interested. Quote Link to comment
+northernpenguin
Free is OK but 'paid for' is reliably better... Sadly I've seen plenty of spots where City Navigator is also inaccurate or missing a routing node and you get crazy routes where it wants you to travel 25km to go across the street. One advantage to OSM maps is, with a little know-how, it is possible to go and edit the map to remove an error. Particularly handy if the routing node problem is, say, on the street you live on.
