etrex oregon 600

Hi

I have an Oregon 600 I was told when I plugged it that my browser didn't support it. Hmmmm so I downloaded a plugin as advised. That worked until I upgraded to Windows 10 now I cant get PC to recognise etrex nor etrex to recognise PC thus rendering my brand new, long coveted GPS, useless in terms of loading GPX files Rrrrrrr.

Any advice before I take it back to the shop and nut the very nice bloke who sold it to me thereby getting myself prosecuted and ending my life in a grimey jail where I will never be able to GC ever again.

Aside from being a drama queen, in my spare time I am a technophobe so answers in plain Hingleesh please.

My apologies in advance if this is the most simple dumb-a** question you have ever seen on here.

Looks like it's a combination of problems.

1. The computer should recognize the GPS when you connect it (external drive)

2. Forget the plugin. You can trick it into working for the time being but that wont last for long as method these plugins work is being phased out by ALL browsers (for security reasons)

3. Do you mean you tried another GPS? An Oregon is not an Etrex

4. Don't kill the salesman (yet :ph34r: ) the Oregon 600 is a great GPS.

5. It's been asked before (daily over the past few weeks) search the forum for "communicator plugin" and you'll be sitting reading quietly for a while :lol:

Workaround for '2'. When (if) you get your unit recognized as removable drive just click "GPX" instead of "send to GPS" and save the file to x:\garmin\gpx or save to your computer and then copy to x:\garmin\gpx . This is exactly what the plugin does but invisible to the user.

So first problem, getting the GPS recognized by the computer. Try the original USB cable, try rebooting the PC, so the usual stuff to locate the problem.

It is a common question, but Win 10 is designed to prevent Garmin Communicator from working.

As mentioned, you may place GPX files directly into the GPX folder of a Garmin GPSr, thus bypassing the plugin. You do the same thing the plugin would do, but have the file copied in a fraction of the time it takes to fix the plugin.

Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. (For a zipped Pocket Query, unzip the file, and you should now have at least one “GPX” file.)

Plug the Garmin into the USB port of the computer.

Find the Garmin as a [DRIVE] or [storage device] and open it;

Therein, locate a file folder named something like Garmin/GPX/;

Click, drag and drop (or copy) the downloaded GPX file(s) to that [DRIVE]:Garmin/GPX/ folder.

Right-click and select Eject, unplug the Garmin;

Go Geocaching.

(From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions)

If you require Communicator, or simply enjoy a challenge, there are steps to cause Communicator to function in Win10, and it seems to work, for now. As mentioned, start reading :anicute::
