D geocaching icons on nuvi

Hi

I use my nuvi mainly for geocaching.

My old nuvi is a 1490 & when I loaded caches into it, it automatically showed the geocaching icons on the screen as I approached them.

I have a 2797 now & it doesn't display the icons.

Someone told me that I would have to have Garmin base camp loaded onto my computer, which I have done, but I don't see anything that helps me.

I'm not real computer savvy so I need some help.

Thanks

Are you doing it via GPX file or POI file ?

I have only had experience using POIs.

Not all Nuvis display caches in the same manner. Some Nuvis will not show caches at all.

I do it using GPX files via pocket queries & will often load more than 100 at a time

To anyone interested, this is the reply that I received from Tom at GPS City.

The Garmin Nuvi 2797LMT is designed as an automotive navigator and will not have the geocaching icons nor can be added as found in the Garmin Outdoor Handheld geocaching friendly GPSs.

What an iPad mess. I've edited the typos:

I'm glad you asked the question. My Nuvi won't show the icons. The caches are in the Nuvi, I can search for them, but they will not display. Would love to know if there's a workaround.

I wonder if Garmin removed the ability to show geocaches so that folks who want to geocache would have to buy a handheld model. Years ago I use to see plenty of people using their garmin car GPS while geocaching.

I use a 2597LMT about 6 months old. It doesn't show decent icons when the caches are loaded as GPX files. However, using GSAK and the nuvi macro (I forget the exact name and I'm away from the computer at the moment) to load them as Points Of Interest they show up with the correct geocaching icons.

There may be other ways to load POIs - base camp may be one, I don't know - so don't give up on it.

Conversely, are there any handheld GPSr units that will "talk" to you while you are driving?

Yes, the Garmin Montana does so.

(And it auto changes profiles when adding or releasing the unit from the cradle (with speaker)

Thanks, but unless I'm missing something when I read about creating POI files, I don't think that this would work for paperless geocaching, where I may be loading several hundred geocaches at one time from a pocket query.

On my Nuvi 2598LMT I have uploaded up to 60,000 caches with full cache listing using Garmin POI through GSAK.

I just purchased the Nuvi 2689lmt and have just loaded geocaches in custom POI. The issue that I am now having is that I dont know to get the geocache icon to show up on the map. We bought this to use to get us to the general location of caches along a route and then use our handheld to get the find. I have used nuvi gpx v2 and garmin POI loader
