Geocaches from SD Card? Oregon 600

Hi guys

Small question here, how exactly can I load my geocaches (if possible) from the SD card?

The reason I ask is because for some reason my Oregon is not recognized anymore by the PC (I tried different PC's, different cables) and I can not add to the Geocaching folder on the device anymore, so I was thinking if I can load them somehow from the SD card.

Thanks

Sure, just place them in a folder on your card named Garmin\GPX. Your GPS will automatically read them from there.

That will be hard to do if the computer doesn't recognize the GPS. It is strange that it's not working on any PC though.

@flooddrop are other USB devices recognized (USB stick, camera, external HD... anything else)?

It's easier to solve problems if the question is asked more clearly and sufficient info is given.

I suspect there might be more than one problem.

1. Oregon is not recognized? What about other devices?

2. Oregon not recognized.. by Windows?(mentioning OS might help too) by browser? (mentioning browser might help).

3. How do you want to save to SD card? Card in GPS? Internal cardreader? External cardreader? Is the SDcard and/or cardreader recognized by the PC?

1. USB sticks work just fine, Mouse / Keyboard work just fine, USB headset works just fine.

When i plug in the Oregon in the USB port it is just not detected. There is not even a notification in system tray that tells me an unknown device was detected. It worked fine for a few hours, then it just stopped. All I did during that period is to upgrade to 4.8 with Garmin Express and test the "Send to GPS" option. I have plugged / unplugged it a few more times without a problem after that, so it might not be the upgrade to blame. At one point... it no longer worked. There is no USB "image" displayed on the device when it is plugged in, it is as if it would not be plugged in at all. Sometimes I get the message that the external power was disconnected but those are few and far between.

2. By windows (both 7 and 10). Not sure what the browser has to do with it unless you are talking about the Garmin Communicator plugin, in which case, no, not working anymore.

3. Saving to SD is not a problem, I got a lot of options... External Card reader for PC, internal for Laptop, or the less clean way of inserting the SD in my tablet and then back in the GPS unit after the gpx was downloaded.

I have set the interface to both Serial and Spanner and nothing. I have hard reset it by holding the user and power buttons.

I have also now come across the http://garminoregon6xx.wikispaces.com/ page with a few more solutions which I need to have a go at.

It is frustrating that it is not working, but as long as I can still geocache with it and not just have an expensive paperweight, I'll be fine. Of-course it would be nice if I figure it out eventually and make it work as intended :)

Have you tried the original USB cable or at least a "thicker" or shorter version cable? Sometimes (my Colorado was picky about that) there's not enough current available if you use a short or thin cable

Yes, that was the reason I asked, you never know if so little info is given. <_<

That should certainly work.

Garmin Serial is the way to go.

That's a good resource for info.

BTW, have you tried the Garmin Webupdater or Basecamp to see if they recognize the GPS?

Next option, if you still have warranty, is to return the unit. (2 years in EU)

I have tried the original one. It worked with it, then stopped. All the other 5 cables I tried were thinner so I guess I need to find another one the same or thicker.

Garmin Serial is the way to go.

Ok, will stop messing with that then and just leave it on serial.

Webupdater yes, did not recognize it; Basecamp no, will give that a try today.

Yeah... not sure that is an option, while the device was new... at least it looked new (all sealed and screen protection still intact)... I got it off a guy that never used it and I have no idea where he got it from.

I don't know if it will work from SD card but you might try a manual downgrade of the firmware. Older versions are available on the wiki pages.

This may be a last resort option.

Thanks, when I'll be so annoyed that I don't care anymore, I'll give this a try also. Don't want to brick it just yet :D .

Before we consider your USB port to be damaged, let's make sure you don't have a couple of settings set incorrectly.

1. Plug your Garmin into the computer. It may not connect as a drive, but is there power going to the device? IE, instead of a battery meter, does it change to the little plug icon?

If no - that is, it's still powered from the batteries, your usb port is damaged. This is may be problematic if you ever want to retrieve data created in the device such as tracks or waypoints, as user created data gets stored on the device itself. Otherwise, anything else you wish to add can be loaded onto an SD card.

If yes, then your USB port isn't completely dead (at least the power pin is working. It's possible you have the interface set to the wrong setting.

Go to Setup > System > Interface. Change it to Garmin Spanner or Garmin Serial. Spanner is nice because you get a choice to connect as a mass storage device, or just use the usb connection as a power source.

If your interface is already set to one of these, then you might have a damaged USB port on the device, which is why it won't connect with any cable or computer you try to connect with.

My Oregon 650, and the 550, sometimes take a long time to wake up when connected to USB. Just a random thing, no pattern, and then it's fine again. It didn't seem to matter if I had it powered on first, but that was suggested. Can you leave your GPSr plugged in for 30 minutes and see if it wakes?

I finally got it to work. I went and bought one of those bling bling cables with gold plated connectors. For the moment it works correctly and is detected by the PC. Lets see for how long

Well, I haven't yet have this kind of issues with my Oregon 600 but using a cheap (read thin) cable my older Colorado switched off regularly that's why I suggested the check on the cable. I keep the original cable that came with the oregon connected to my PC and have a shorter cable with me when caching in case I need to load an extra cache from my tabled (with GDAK on it).

My guess is that your GPS drew just a bit too much current when booting creating a big enough voltage drop to stop it from starting up all the way.

Something similar and related, yet a bit different happened with my Oregon 600. Using a PC, GSAK, and loading .gpx through USB was fine. Making and loading maps to the Oregon 600 SD through Basecamp via USB resulted in a couple of micro SD cards actually being software locked. Yes, software locked. I could not format the micro SD, neither in the Oregon 600 as a drive letter, nor via a card reader. I tried every tip I could find and even on Mac OS. Nothing worked. This happened twice on new Sandisk Extreme 32GB cards. Luckily, it was new and ordered via Amazon so exchanges were easy.

It came down to the USB cable I was using. Same trusty ole mini USB cable I've been using for years. Switched out to the still-new USB cable that shipped with my few month old Oregon 600 and everything works perfectly.
