+BAMBOOZLE
How many caches can my 64S hold in the GPX format I am used to using ? Is it 5000 like my 62S ? On the 62S if you load 5000 caches many times there are issues and I keep it to below 3000.....are there issues when you load 5000 GPX to the 64S? Quote Link to comment
Pacific NW
In theory, unlimited caches... https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B0b02f820-03db-11e0-e050-000000000000%7D Cut-and-paste from above link: "GPSMAP 64 (series) 2,000 GPX files 5,000 waypoints No limit on geocaches (outside of max number of GPX files supported and memory available) 200 routes, 250 points per route 200 saved tracks 2,000 archive tracks* 10,000 points per track 500 custom map tiles 250 BirdsEye Imagery files Approximately 3,000 mapping segments" Quote Link to comment
+JohnCNA
Garmin's specs say 5000. But they ship it with a GGZ file installed with >250,000, so the 5000 number has to refer to using GPX. I don't typically load mine up that high; I rarely have more than 500-1000 on it at any one time. If you use GSAK, the latest 'Garmin Export' macro has a 'export as GGZ' option, so if you want to load a lot more and not worry about running into any limits, that would be the way to go. +Mineral2
You can safely load well over 5000 caches via gpx. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Garmin's specs say 5000. Garmin's spec says 5000 waypoints. Caches are unlimited. It will get really slow booting if you have a huge number in GPX format though! GGZ fixes that. Quote Link to comment

It will get really slow booting if you have a huge number in GPX format though! GGZ fixes that. Thanks for the update. As for GGZ, when I first got the 64s, it came with 250,000 caches preinstalled in a GGZ file. Boot time was very fast! Faster than the eTrex30 that it replaced. I played with GGZ for a bit. I unpacked the GGZ and loaded it into a new database in GSAK. Then added about 10,000 more caches to it and saved it back out as GGZ again and replaced the original GGZ with the updated one on the 64s. The next bootup after that took about 10 minutes. Subsequent bootups were back to just a few seconds. I guess from that experience that the 64s reindexes the file when it's changed or a new one is loaded, but does not do so on subsequent boots. I suppose loading up a ton of caches via GGZ might appeal to some people, but if it were regularly updated, that first bootup/indexing after the update would get rather tedious. Quote Link to comment

+Red90
Basically if you use GSAK, use GGZ. It defaults to sending in GGZ format when you set your device to the 64. If you are not using GSAK, I would wonder how you manage 5000+ caches. Quote Link to comment

Been using GSAK for years but just got the new ver a few months ago.....don't recall it defaulting to GGZ though, other than getting my PQ's direct from GS it seems business as usual. Mine are just set to give me all caches that are not disabled and not puzzles (I have a separate system for puzzles to keep out the ones I haven't solved), and that I have not found. Run the PQ files for my local area weekly to get updated logs and weed out found listings, run PQs for other areas the morning before I head out that way. It's really not that difficult to manage caches without GSAK. Quote Link to comment

When you tell it the unit is a 64, and you "send waypoints", they will be sent as a GGZ file. It all happens behind the scenes... You don't get a choice. If you are fancy and use the GarminExport macro, you can choose. Quote Link to comment

I see when set for 64S the File Name ends in ggz.....if I backspace that off and type gpx will it send in that format ? Also, when using a 62S ,is it in File Name where I would change " geocaches " to some other word to keep from overwriting when I want to put on multiple GPX files....I have been combining these files in to one file in GSAK and then loading. Finally, will the 64S read multiple ggz files ? Quote Link to comment
+Red90
You can have multiple GGZ files. As to the other questions, you would need to ask over at GSAK. I always use the macro as it does much more. Quote Link to comment
