+colleda
My good ol' reliable Etrex 20 seems to have had a hissy fit and decided not to play. It can be turned on and the menu screen comes on but after that nothing will work. No reaction to pressing any of the buttons or toggle. I can only switch it off by removing a battery. I have tried a factory reset but nothing happens. Have removed SD card, no affect. Replaced SD card, still no affect. Anyone had this happen or know what the problem could be? Quote Link to comment
+Mineral2
Have you deleted any user data and user created files? Quote Link to comment
+cliptwings
If it still connects to your computer, you might try re-installing the software update. Quote Link to comment
+colleda
It wont "connect" to computer. It will power up from the computer but I get the same result as mentioned above. Haven't been updating or deleting files. I was using it for tracking and using the trip computer. I switched it off when I got home. Next time I powered it up was when the problem occurred. Can moisture cause this? Reason I ask is I was windsurfing (hence tracking and trip computer) and had it double ziplocked but there was a small amount of moisture in the inner bag when I took the Etrex out. Just incase, I've left it in a box of rice for the last couple of days as this sometimes helps with moisture in phones. Another question. Could a dodgy "Back" button (upper rhs) be a cause? +Mineral2
Moisture shouldn't be the problem, though I suppose it's not entirely out of the question. These things are fairly waterproof and have to be submerged for long periods of time before any real damage is incurred. You aren't able to mount it to your computer as an external drive (mass storage device) to access the .gpx files it creates for waypoints and tracks that you make on the device? Quote Link to comment

As I mentioned above it will connect and power up from the computer but does not go to mass storage like it usually does. It just displays a "locked" menu screen. Quote Link to comment
+colleda
It Lives Again! I decided today to do some open heart surgery on the little Etrex or, at least, have a look inside to see what, if anything, I could find that looks suspicious. I have previously taken this one apart to fix replace the toggle rubber so its not new territory to me. Anyhoo, I did find a tiny bit of corrosion on the circuit board connection to the USB socket, like that whitish stuff that sometimes appears on battery terminals. I brushed it off and sprayed a tiny little bit of WD40 into each of the micro switches then blew it all dry with a little compressed air. I then reassembled everything - taking care to get the gasket just right. Powered it up and all is good again. You bewdy, as we say in these parts. I can now put the Etrex 10 back on the shelf. I suspect a little atmospheric moisture may have worked its way inside and decided to have a little fun. Thanks to those who offered suggestions. If anyone, in the future needs to know how to take one of these apart just PM me. Quote Link to comment
