picked up our first trackable

Recommended Posts

On our travels today picked up a German trackable. We've seen quite a few in the few months we've been geocaching but have always left them behind as we won't be going anywhere till July. When we are heading to Liverpool to stop with family.

Is it wrong to hold onto a trackable for so long. The paperwork on this one though laminated was quite damp. So figured I could dry it all out and pop him in another cache if its not okay to hold onto him.

He is destined for the pyramids from his history he got as far as turkey and ended up in Manchester, last log October last year. Now he is in Anglesey. Felt quite sorry for the owners to have it get so close and end up further away than when it started.

If you haven logged that you retrieved the TB, you can go here, type the Tracking Number and log it: http://www.geocaching.com/track/travelbug.aspx

On the TB's page near the top of the page, the name of the Owner is shown, as a link. Click that link and you can send a Message to the TB Owner. Ask if it's OK to keep the TB for the time planned. You can also type your intentions in the TB log. If there's no reply, that could simply mean there was a problem with the "Private Message" system (there are several possibilities). That's why I suggest making the log, too.

Some people want the TB to just wander far & wide without being held by any one cacher. Some don't really care what happens. But you may ask them.

It is a good idea to get the paper dried. Lamination tends to fail after a while, nobody knows when. :anicute:

Its a German trackable and the number doesn't work on this website I have logged it on the German website geokrety. Also the trackable wasn't listed as being in the cache.

That's because it's not a Groundspeak trackable....It's trackable on the website you mentioned.

There are other websites and products, this is just the bestIMO one. You may also come across Pathtags, which also have numbers, but are not trackable here.

Will keep an eye out for them. Have seen a few Australian ones, and an american one. Hoping to find more as we go further afield, finding mainly nano and film canister sized ones round here.

Have messaged the owner as suggested and heard back and they are happy for us to hang onto it, and glad it was safe.

If I have a TB and know I will be travelling afar in the coming months, then I also email the owner to ask if it is okay to hold on to it for that length of time, this is what I did at the end of last year, the TB owner was happy for me to keep it until we travelled. Good on you, emailing the owner, it lets them know it will be moving about later and is safe.

Happy caching :cute:
