Transferring waypoints from one GPS to another?

Has anyone ever transferred their waypoints from one GPS to another via their PC? I was thinking specifically from a Eagle Explorer to a Lowrance Globalmap 100, when I upgrade, but would it be possible using some common program to download waypoints from a friends Garmin or Magellan units? Or better yet, maybe a direct link GPS to GPS?

I am sure you can find some shareware program that would be compatible with both. Something like easyGPS or such would do it. Someone else may know a program that would work with both units.

Max, most of the Garmin units will talk directly to each other, and Garmin sells a simple GPSR-GPSR cable. I've already done it with my 12XL and map76 a couple of times, as well as swapping waypoints with friends in the field. It's definitely a very handy feature. Other than that, I've been using G7toWin on my laptop for general waypoint, route and track management, and to exchange data between MapTech's Terrain Navigator program as well as to/from my GPSR units when I'm home. Programs such as G7toWin and EasyGPS, to name just two, are genuinely helpful and easy to use. Cheers ...

? A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ?

Can you transfer waypoints from GPS to GPS on Garmin models such as the eMap, Etrex series, or GPS V? If so, what GPS menu option do you use? I have read the manuals for many of these models and have not seen this option mentioned.

Steve, since I don't own or use the models you mention, I can't speak for their specific operations.

When I transfer waypoints from my 12XL to my map76, for example, I connect both units using the GPS-GPS data transfer cable, turn both on, and ensure that both have the Garmin interface selected. Then on the 12XL I select SETUP MENU > INTERFACE > SEND WPT? (this last group of operation options is just below the GRMN/GRMN format option). When I press ENTER, the waypoints are copied over in a few seconds. I can also transfer tracks and routes to either unti.

I'm assuming the process is similar for eTrex, eMap, and GPS V. If there's a difference, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Cheers ...

I don't know if this is of any help, but the guts inside http://www.lostoutdoors.com was created so that friends and I could share waypoints between different makes and models.

We email waypoints between Garmin and Magellan all the time. Other makes, that mimic these protocols, should work as well. Currently, you have to be running Internet Explorer. I did a Netscape Plug-in just before Xmas, my friend Dave was supposed to test it and give me a thumbs up/down but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

This is one place using my Palm as a GPS has come in handy. I beamed a few hundred waypoints to a couple of friends of mine in just a couple of seconds.

I remember reading that sending waypoints unit-to-unit will not work with an eTrex or eMap as the source. They are apparently "slave" devices only and cannot initiate a transfer.

PC software is probably the easiest way to go.

Has anyone used the $30 data/point manager for the Lowrance units?

This topic is an oldy but well worth updating. The older Garmin GPS units such as the GPS 12 and 12XL had the extremely useful "SEND WPT" command as discussed above. That feature does not appear to be carried through to the eTrex range or the new 60 and 76 series.

Garmin have a FAQ that summarises what we already know here: "What interface setting do I use for my GPS when I connect it to a computer, chartplotter, autopilot, differential beacon receiver, or another Garmin GPS?".

There's a wealth of additional detail here: "Working with the Garmin Interface".

However does anyone know if it's possible to simply transfer waypoints from one Garmin GPS60 to another GPS60? via direct cable?

The application in mind where this is extremely useful is pest control where a foreman loads waypoints to his workers GPS units out in the field, without the need for any PC type device. Currently they use the GPS 12 / 12XL but with the introduction of the GPS60 with it's huge track log capacity that's proven to be more popular.

Thanks - Tony.

If you have 2 Meridians, in the first one: save the waypoints to a file on the SD card. Take the card and put it in the second one and open the file into the working memory. You can then give the card back to the first one and all the waypoints are in the second one.

For 2 eXplorists in any combination of 400, 500 600, or XL: its very easy to transfer multiple files. Take the SD card from the first unit and put it into the second and copy the waypoint/geocache files into the internal memory. The files can them be used, even without an SD card in the second unit.

Too simple, it will never work.:lol::lol::lol:

Had a bit of a thought - it happens occasionally. Connected a 12XL to a 76CS with a Garmin to Garmin cable and used the "Send WPTS" function on the 12XL to send the waypoints to the flash (and in this case dumber) big brother. Worked very well.

So that's pretty cool. However when telling the GPS 12XL to receive waypoints it looked like it wanted to oblige but transferred none, reporting there were invalid waypoints despite me first making sure they all had less than 6 or less letters and none had geocache or fancy symbols.

The 12XL received tracks - sort of OK - though. Split a continuous track into individual tracks of 1 point each. No doubt there's settings and reasons behind the various behaviors but the main thing is that a bunch of waypoints can be loaded to other GPS's without a 3rd device.
