Garmin 62 series with high speed, high capacity micro sdhc cards

I've read both positive and negative reports about using high speed (class 6) and/or high capacity (16gb) cards in garmin gps units. The "official" garmin information appears to be rather dated at this point, so I'm wondering what the current consensus is on using 16gb class 6 cards in the new 62 series units.

 

I understand about the map segment limitation, but now that Birdseye is out, larger cards actually do have a significant use. The 16gb class 6 cards are no longer all that expensive, so I'd prefer to get one of these cards if there is no reason "not" to use these cards with the 62 series,

So it sounds like larger capacity cards are working, but what about class 6 cards? The price difference between class 4 and class 6 cards is no longer all that big, so it seems like a waste to get a class 4 if a class 6 will work. Even though it won't make a difference in the gps, you'll at least get the faster speed with a card reader, and you'll have a slightly more "future proof" card if you end up using it with any devices that DO take advantage of the faster speed.

 

Does anybody have any experience -- good or bad -- with 16gb class 6 cards in these units, particularly the 62 series?

 

On a related note, what are the potential issues with using faster class cards in this device? I've seen some people say that it's "not recommended," but I've never seen any explanation why this would be the case. Why wouldn't the faster card simply work below it's rated speed in a device that didn't take advantage of the faster capability? I've never seen any card manufacturers recommend using slower cards in slower devices, and in fact, it seems like many manufacturers stop making the slower class cards as faster class cards are released.

 

The same question goes for large capacity cards. If any given unit can "see" the full capacity, why would it be a potential problem to use it? It seems like the ability to see the full capacity would mean that the hardware supported it, so where would the problem occur?

 

Are there issues I'm not thinking of, such as heat issues, which larger or faster cards?

He said micro sdhc. I do not have a 62s, but they work fine on Colorados and Oregons. I'm using a 16 GB, class 4 SDHC card in my Colorado with around 10 GB of maps with no apparent problems.

Yea thats what I said he asked about a high speed and/or or a high capacity(SDHC)card whether they are micro(which the 62s use) or not don't matter. A SD or MicroSD unit can not use a MicroSDHC or SDHC card. They are not compatible. Colorados only handle SD cards themselves so if you are using an SDHC card you are not getting the full 16GB HC out of the card. Check bold below no way a SD device can handle a SDHC card.

Before you go buy a SDHC MIcro card read this. The 62's do not support SDHC micros. Matter of fact I don't think any garmins do that I have seen. The only GPSr that supports SDHC cards is Delorme that I have seen. There may be more though that I don't know about though I am sure. I use a class 4 SDHC 16gb in my PN-40 and it does fine.

 

 

If your computer's internal memory card reader works with 2GB (or lower) SD memory cards but fails to read a 4GB (or higher) SDHC card, then the computer's internal reader is not SDHC compliant. The initial SD card spec defined the interface for cards only up to 2GB capacity. The subsequent SDHC spec was developed to provide increased capacity up to 32GB. Computers and other products purchased before 2008 may not be SDHC compatible. Computers and other products purchased before 2007 are not SDHC compatible. If the card reader slot on your computer does not have the SDHC logo, it is most likely not SDHC compatible and will only read cards up to 2GB capacity.

 

Solution: If your computer's internal memory card reader is not SDHC compatible, you have 3 options:

 

1. You can buy an inexpensive SDHC card reader that will connect to any computer USB port.

 

2. You can connect your camera (or other device) with the SDHC card still in the device, directly to a USB port on a computer using a USB cable. You should be able to transfer files from the device to the computer this way.

 

3. You can contact you computer manufacturer to see if they have a firmware update for your model that will make it SDHC compatible.

 

The SD card is a older model, and is not compatible with SDHC, which has a larger capacity.

 

SD Cards can store up to 2GB of storage(returned this to original statement), without using SDHC technology. The cards use the FAT12 or FAT16 File System*.

 

SDHC (Secure Digital High-Capacity) can store over 4GB, and is capable of supporting up to 32GB. SDHC was introduced in June 2006. These cards use the FAT32 File System*.

 

Older devices (designed for SD only) cannot support SDHC memory cards, but all SDHC-supporting devices are backwards-compatible with SD.

 

colorado specs look in the maps and memory section and it only accepts SD cards not SDHC.

 

62 s specs and it lists miroSD card also.

Speed is compatible for any system. SD cards can work in a SDHC compatible unit but a SDHC can not work in a SD unit.

I'm really confused now. I thought microSD cards only went up to 2GB, and that above this it would be a microSDHC card -- i.e. that all 4, 8 and 16 GB cards were "SDHC" cards. This is what the information you posted says, i.e:

 

SD Cards can store up to 2GB of storage, without using SDHC technology.

 

and

 

SDHC (Secure Digital High-Capacity) can store over 2GB

 

If this is the case, then how can Garmin units be limited to only microSD cards? Their own specs list compatibility with 4GB cards, which according to the info you posted would have to be an SDHC card (since it's greater than 2GB.) What am I missing here.

 

Note that there are numerous reports of people saying they're using 8 or 16 GB cards, some of which say they're using over 12GB of the space for Birdseye imagery.

Yea thats a little dated too. SD cards now go up to 8 GB. Sorry I should have updated that part. That was something I found online. SD cards go from 256(which is old) to 8 GB and SDHC cards go from 4 GB9although you don't see that often) to 32 GB. What I was trying to more emphasis is that the 62's do not support microSDHC cards only MicroSD cards. I am not sure how people are using SDHC cards is SD equipment. I tried it in an old camera I had and the SDHC card would not work in it because it was only SD compatible.

The Colorado works with SDHC cards just fine. Otherwise you could only use 2GB SD cards with it. If a device is limited to SD cards only then an SDHC card would not work at all.

SD cards go to 2GB if they follow the specification. Some manufacturers have created 4GB SD cards by going out of spec a little but not all SD compliant devices can read them. I have not heard of 8GB SD cards. Where have you seen them being sold?

Don't rely on Garmin's web site. They don't put SDHC for some reason in their spec pages. People have been using 8gb cards in their 62's which means they do support SDHC.

 

Micro, Mini and Full size is irrelevant. It's only the package size. That's why the micro-mini and micro-full adapters are only plastic shells.

I think what it comes down to as I read more is that the 8GB MicroSDHC is compatible with the standard MicroSD slot. I take it that's why garmin does not state that it is SDHC compatible. I use a MicroSD in my cell phone but I think it is only 2 GB.

 

I changed that part but It was late and I guess I did not realize i put 8gb. Sorry. You are right 4 GB is the highest.

 

Seems to me though that garmin should state correctly what it takes in it's units. The one guy says he can use a 16GB SDHC card in his colorado but if you go to the site it shows only standard SD card in the memory section and not a micro SD card. :) Now I am wondering if you get a 8gb micro SD card and use the sleeve if you can put that in a standard SD slot. There a big difference between the two and from my experience you can not use a SDHC card in a standard SD slot. Two different file systems. I have a garmin NUVI maybe I will try a 8 GB micro SD cards in it even though it says that it can only handle SD cards. That would be awesome because of the added storage.

 

It is good to hear that they can take the 8GB MicroSDHC card. I am using a PN-40 right now with a 16 GB SDHC and thinking of getting a 62 at income tax time.

No, it's not. But the device is probably not labled MicroSDHC anywhere but really is a MiscroSDHC thus leading to confusion.

I use a 16GB SDHC in my Colorado as well. Unfortunately, the engineers don't usually create the web site and the marketing drones tend to leave tiny details like that out sometimes.

Nope. The 8GB microSD card would by microSDHC and would not work in an SD reader/device. It would have to be a SDHC reader/device.

Hmm, all I did was slip the 16 GB microSDHC straight in to my 62s. It replaced a working 8GB microSDHC card (wasn't big enough for all my maps). Both work perfectly fine. A fellow local cacher has the same setup. Other Oregon users also have used microSDHC for some time now. Your info about it not working in the 62s is wrong. (Probably because of Garmin's website only suggests microSD.) Faster Class 6 cards are not required and provide no perceivable benefit in a GPSr except perhaps during the initial transfer of the compiled files.

 

Some older GPSr like the 60 series have problems with the SDHC cards because they weren't even invented at the time of it's release. I never went beyond 2 GB because of the 2025 segment barrier so it was pointless for me. However there are some ingenious people who have figured out a way (not me of course) to work with micro SDHC cards in the 60 series. Browse the forum or net to find out more.

Look.... You are wrong. All of the newer handheld units starting at the Colorado use SDHC or regular SD. Like I said earlier, I'm using an SDHC and I have over 10 GB of data that the GPS uses with no problems.

 

Colorados use full sized SD (or SDHC) cards. All the other ones use microSD or microSDHC.

I am not wrong just miss informed by the garmin site. If I read something that says it is SD compatible not SDHC compatible well that's all I can go by. Really you would figure that garmin would update that if it was true. I have a nuvi and it just says it handles SD cards so I never tried an SDHC card because it is not compatible. Now opposite that, I have a delorme and it says it is SD/SDHC compatible so I have a 16 GB class 4 card that works great. My camcorder along with my camera all state that they are SDHC compatible and I have an older camera that is SD compatible and SDHC cards do not work. So am I wrong or is garmin?. You figure garmin being a huge GPS company would state that because it is a big difference whether a unit can handle SD or SDHC!!! :o Other than that I really don't care because I don't have a 62!! ;) I just was going by what garmin has on there site and nothing else and the guy said he was going to get a MicroSDHC card and I knew from checking the 62out(because I do hope to get one) that the garmin site says it only handles MicroSD cards.
