Kmroberts3
Hi all, I have a Garmin Etrex 10 GPS, which works perfectly well for loading in traditional caches and finding them (who'd have thought it!?), however my problem starts when I go for a multi. Once I have worked out the co-ords of the final cache, and use the the GPS to put in the co-ords instead of a downloaded cache, it sends me round in circles every time without fail, nowhere near where I'm supposed to go! I have to resort to converting the co-ords so google maps on my iphone can understand them, which isn't ideal half way up a mountain with limited signal! Any ideas / suggestions extremely appreciated Quote Link to comment
MartyBartfast
Try doing it this way: When you have the next set of co-ords go to this screen http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TkFGsoMV4IM/U57xd-h5UAI/AAAAAAAAACY/rJlukQPygMI/s1600/20140612_102231.jpg then select enter next stage, and put in the next set of co-ords there, it should change the location of the cache, if it's a multi with several waypoints you can just keep changing it. +GeoTrekker26
Exactly as Marty says. Note that after you enter the new set of coordinates the GPS will now say you are searching for Next, instead whatever the cache name is. This is normal. Quote Link to comment

Hitman9956
Hi All, My partner has just bought me a Garmin Etrex 10 as a gift - but I am unsure how exactly to use it for basics. For instance the manual says to use OpenCaching which I have done - but it's only updated until 2013 and I have no idea on how to use it or download the 2015 caches onto it or my limit. Please are you able to provide any tips or advice on how to get started? Many thanks Suliman Quote Link to comment
Gitchee-Gummee
Basically..... ignore what the manual does/doesn't say, regarding "****caching" vs. geocaching. It works fine using the data from geocaching.com. Garmin is only trying to promote their version of geocaching... not wrongly, but they go to the extent of not even mentioning or giving assistance to those who want to use the geocaching.com website and/or data. Note: Some of their help-line "operators" have even told folks that they don't believe "it will work with geocaching.com"... and that is darn close to an out-and-out lie. You are a Premium Member. Learn to use Pocket Queries: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=118 You can download up to 1,000 caches 10 times/day. EXCEPT: I believe the eTrex 10 will hold only 500 caches, and that by itself creates a (minor) problem. If you load the device to the max, it may cause a lock-up. It needs memory to function, if you use it all for storage... the unit cannot work. Hold your cache loadings to 400 or less. Loading (using a PC): Create and [submit] Pocket Query (PQ)> Download that data to your computer> Plug GPSr to computer and turn it on> Allow unit to boot... computer should "alert" you when the device is recognized> Through the start-up menu, access "Drives"... you should see GARMIN as an auxiliary drive> Open that GARMIN drive to locate a file noted as GARMIN/GPX> In another window, locate the downloaded PQ data, if it is a zipped file, unzip it... the result will be two .gpx files> Drag and Drop each of those two files to the GARMIN/GPX file in the device> Right-click while hovering cursor over the GARMIN drive and select "Eject"... the computer will say, "Safe to disconnect" or similar> Turn off the GPSr, unplug it> Go geocaching. It may sound complicated, but it really isn't. Just a few moments worth of practice and it will seem old-hat. Besides, the forums are a good place to get help even if Garmin itself is reluctant to provide it. Edited March 10, 2015 by Gitchee-Gummee Quote Link to comment
gpsblake
I regularly load 900 geocache pocket queries into my Etrex 10. It does fine with one file with 900. However, 2,000 caches is a real push on the Etrex 10 with the limited memory. I can't get 2,000 into mine unless I remove the basemap and time zone map and even then, it cries like crazy about the low memory. Note: I strongly recommend removing the basemap anyways, it doesn't show anything but state and country boundaries. The Etrex 10 would be a lot better had they simply put 24mb or 124mb of memory instead of the roughly 9mb it has now, which would have only cost them pennies a unit.
