Need Help with Costa Rican Cache Maintenance!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

So, w're dumb and didn't do something properly and now we'e looking for help.

We found a travel bug at a cache near our house (in Canada) and thought it would be awesome to take it with us on vacation to Costa Rica so that it would get to go very far. We decided to start our own cache at a beautiful beach. But now the cache may not be approved because (duh) we live too far away to be able to take care of it.

Is there anyone in CR, near Brasilito / Conchal Beach that would be willing to volunteer to take care of our little cache? If not, please pass this along. I don't want the person's little travel bug to stop dead.

Thanks!

It seems that we don't have many locals in this forum...

I am in Heredia, and Conchal and Arenal are rather far from me, and I may move out of the country in the mid-term, so I wouldn't be a good prospect for an owner/caretaker. I believe geocaching needs to grow in the country and I appreciate you making the effort to set a couple caches while you were here. I may make a few too, provided that I have another geocacher to yield ownership to when I leave.

I would recommend to look who is the owner of the caches nearer to your's location to see if they are interested in taking ownership. Also, if I find myself going around that area soon I may be able to rescue the TB and get it moving again.

This forum is mostly read by Mexicans and Bermudians, would be nice if other active countries had their own forums to avoid this kind of problems, it is very difficult to find it for your own country and then when you look in the forum most posts are Mexico or Bermuda so you basically stop looking and go somewhere else.

For example, we have a growing community of geocachers in Panama as well as tourists that come and want to plant their own but it always takes a long time to get a listing approved and very difficult to raise the questions related to your own country.

In Panama for example most geocachers are in the capital but many of the geocaches are in the country side. Sure, we do go out of our way to plant them and check them out or arrange for a local non-geocacher to look after it but it is nearly impossible to fully comply.

Also, with the growing amount of tourists coming, many want to plant their own geocaches but find it difficult to come in contact with the locals due to the lack of a dedicated forum for that country.

I agree absolutely.

Bermuda didnt even belong to any of the group forums. I approached one of the Lackeys Miss Jenn and asked her to put us in a group. Because there is not alot of forum use by many countries, they dont usually get their own forum page, they share it with other Countries. I have been posted on here for many cachers who are vacationing in Bermuda to let them know we do have a geocaching group and our own website, and a group on Facebook, to help them with any questions they have when they come to bermuda to cache or also to work with us to organize Events.

I also need someone who lives near Aernal Volcano Park to maintain my cache I created on one of the trails.

Hi Snamm, I'm a local from CR and I'm going back in Nov. If the cache is still there, I will be more than glad to give it some maintenance!

I am not trying to point any fingers but I've found caches listing for quite a few caches in Costa Rica that are owned by locals but have not been maintained. I'll be in San Jose for a week in the second week in August and there are three caches close to hotel where I'm staying. From reading the logs it does't look like any of the three are still in place. All three have numerous DNFs (and a few bogus finds even though the cache is missing). The most recent legitimate find on all three was last November and one of them hasn't been found since 2011 yet all three are still marked as active.

If there aren't many Ticos participating in the forums and can take over maintenance on a vacation cache you can find other caches nearby, and send a PM to it's owner and maybe get a response that way.

Bumping this thread. I live in the Arenal area and I'm happy to help out. Went out today and found 3 of the 6 caches I looked for. From spoiler photos it appears at least two of the other three have disappeared. So is life here. I'm going to start planting some caches around the area because there are quite few.
