SP's Summer 2016 Remote Event/s

Recommended Posts

As you may know, in the past I've run nine "Britain's most remote" events. Those being 2015's on Mull, 2014 on Jersey, 2013 on Skye (a non-event!), 2012 on Bryher IoS, 2011 on Eigg, Small Isles, 2010 south of Jersey, 2009 on Unst, Shetlands, 2008 on St Agnes, IoS and 2007 on St Kilda in the outer, outer Hebrides. In 2014 I also held Mainland Europe's most Northerly meet in Norway.

For the tenth incarnation of this event series, I want to push the boat out - perhaps literally. I'm considering returning to the Isles of Scilly (visited 2008/12) but perhaps the tenth deserves something a bit more... ambitious?

So, would anyone be interested in i) Suggesting somewhere suitable (not Scotland though) ii) Going to Gavdos, south of Crete - recognised as Europe's most southerly point - for a cache event? I'm looking at early July so I'm home in time for the Geolympix at the end of the month.

Also, an early heads-up: For 2017 I'm considering returning to St Kilda for an anniversary visit, while also seeing Barra, the Uists etc. There's two caches out there now, including one I've not found/set

There wasn't a swell of enthusiasm for the APE trip, and the with sad death of its owner, some question over the cache's future. I'd be very reticent to organise (with probable financial exposure) a large-scale trip to it without Groundspeak confirming it's safe, and fine, and the icon will live on - rather than being killed-off, as they have with every other Grandfathered cache type (you can't adopt Virtuals or Webcams, for example). I'm glad you're keeping an eye on it though, and never say never...

How about going to the Isles of Scilly but going to Samson, an island uninhabited since the 1850s. If the weather is fit (it should be at that time of year), the boatmen on St Marys will run a boat out at 10.15 and you have to land by dinghy from the big boat as there is no quay. There is a lovely beach, and several ruined houses and things. See pictures for more detail!

Thanks heartradio. Having tried to get there in 2008 and 2012, I'm not sure it's right for an event - boats are just too irregular - but thank you for the suggestion. I've already held the UK's most southerly meet (St Agnes) and England's most westerly (Bryher) on the Scillies, so I'll need to work on a really good idea if I go back next year. At least there are more new caches for me to go for, having cleared the islands in 2012 (and 2008, I think) B)

Partly inspired by heartradio's suggestion, I've decided on another of the Isles of Scilly's uninhabited islands for this year's Remote event - White Island, the most northerly accessible island of Scilly. It's tidal and attached to St Martin's at low tide.

Please put Sunday July 17th 2016 in your West Country caching diary. 11.30am-12pm, to match low tide (10.05am BST, but it's hard to get onto the island that early unless you're staying there). 10.15 boat from St Mary's.

Any questions? Fire away! I'll post a link to the event here as soon as I'm able. I hope it'll be a 6-month listing candidate as accommodation on Scilly gets booked up early.

Drat! I'll be on the Scillies in April!

That's on the date we arrive! Not sure if we will have landed by then but I will put it in the diary.

Think that is the way I've read the page and ferry to St Martins is as such a day trip.

Is there a link to pre book the St Martins Ferry?

St Martins Ferry will be a day trip from St Marys. Boats usually go 10:15 ish and return around 4:30 from the Quay. No need to book, just turn up if going with the Boatmens Association. See their website for more details.

Great fun last year - so much so I'm back to Lundy on August 8th: Reclaiming Lundy for the People of Freedonia! - Ideal for a visit after the Devon Mega. For details of my other summer caching plans, look for 'SP Takes it to Extremes Again - June 2017'

Also thanks to Happy Humphrey for this suggestion of the Azores. I got to Sao Miguel - the big island - last month for £86 there-and-back-via-a-stop-in-Lisbon and had a lovely time. I'll be back for the most westerly cache in a year or two B)

For 'remote from signs of human influence' spots you might find the astrononomy based 'dark skies' initiatives an interesting angle, especially for events when some easily observable event in the night sky is scheduled* : try here for places, and here for information. For planning ahead this might be handy.

*e.g. meteor showers are reasonably reliable, mind you, clouds in the way are unfortunately unreasonably reliable too ...
