+geohominum
It has been year since I have used this for geocaching, but I am going out with the scouts, and I want to show them the difference between this type of topo searching and map searching. I tried to use gpsfile, but cannot reach the site. I have no problem buying the Garmin brand topo map, but am not sure if the summit is compatible anymore. I have basemap loaded on the computer (I used to use mapsource.) Any suggestions on getting a topo map on the summit? Thanks, Greg ki4bbl Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
gpsfiledepot.com has topo maps for many areas, likely yours included. They also have a tutorial there for how to load them to the older units. It's not as easy as with the newer ones, but it does work -- it's how the site started out. Quote Link to comment
+geohominum
Thanks so much. Just before going out on the trip, gpsfiledepot was accessible, so I chose the area I was going to be in and loaded it to the gps. Worked like a champ. I actually enjoy the convoluted choosing and loading of maps. The summit got us right where we needed to go. Greg Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
Yes, I had checked to make sure the site was 'up' before posting. I don't think I've ever seen it down before. It is a little convoluted for older units since I am remembering that it is necessary to do the tile selection within Mapsource or similar to create and send the map to the unit. Glad you were able to sort that out and make it work for you. Quote Link to comment
