New geocacher needs help

I'd say first off find more caches. You've been at this one day- are you still going to be interested in this in a month? 3? 6? A year? Or is it just going to be uncared for. Still want to do it? Find more caches- different types. Get an idea what works, what doesn't. What's cool and lame. What's waterproof, and what's not. The hide a cache that's cool and waterproof.

Find one, hide one. Good philosophy.

Hiding a cache (and having it approved and listed) is not an easy thing to do without reading the guidelines... at least three times!

1] to see what they say

2] to see what you missed the first time

3] to comprehend what you read the first two times

Even at that, most first attempts fail quite often.

Looking at the map for your first find suggests to me that you are gonna have a tough time of it! There will be distance (from other caches) issues and most likely permission issues -- yes, you do need permission when you don't own the land on which the cache is placed.

Finding a few more just might help a bit, too.

Hey fellow geocachers! So I am trying to figure out how to upload my own geocache that I will be hiding tomorrow, and I have been unable to figure out how to do this. A little help please?

We were in the same spot as you, the site seems to miss the BASIC STEPS.

Here they are:

1) Go to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx

i2) In the right hand column, click "create a geocache" button

3) If you already know where you want to/ or have hid it...look on the right hand side again "Already know your hiding spot?" and click that.

4) this leads you to a new page, you will click "traditional geocache" on the left.

5) then this brings up the coordinates page. Type in the GPS coordinates in ANY format to locate it on the map. Any iPhone or Android has an Ap for GPS coordinates you can download for free.

6) after this step you create a write up for your cache.

7) it has to be reviewed for some reason, make sure you click 'submit'!

Totally disagree. If you like it, hide some caches! Go for it.

Someone who has done this for one full DAY is committed enough to put a film pot behind a road sign, disappear, and leave unmaintained geo-litter for others to deal with when they get tired of geocaching a month after placing the cache. Who cares if they're absent - it's one more smiley for the rest of us!

No - at least a little commitment is needed to place a cache AND maintain it. There are too many place-and-disappear cache owners as it is.

This is the reason there's so many cr*p caches out there now, people hiding when they think that's what all caches are like.

Find a good few & you'll have more idea about good & bad hides.

PLEASE go out and find some more caches first......

no, you don't have to find more than 2-3 to get the hang of it. Hide new ones!

Read the guidelines (you have read the guidelines?) it does say:

The more geocaches that you have found, the better you will understand the various elements that make up a great geocaching experience. This knowledge will be invaluable when you place a hide, and likely make your geocache more enjoyable for the community. We encourage you to find at least twenty geocaches before you choose to hide one.

Three finds to the account. (All yesterday!)

One cache is double logged. (So you appear to have four finds)

One seems you have found a gamepiece to another game... (QR Code)

One log gives a Hint to where the cache is hidden. (Thought that was the CO's responsibility?)

Seems you have the hang of this game!

Here they are:

1) Go to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx

Groundspeak posts the "basic steps" and how-to instructions in a lot of different places. If one truly wants to learn, then it's pretty easy to find the necessary information.

The very first basic step should be to read and re-read and read again the Guidelines:

http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

Then a very helpful resource is the Help Center:

http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php

Finding a certain number of caches before hiding one is somewhat helpful, but I think it's more important to find a variety of types and D/T ratings first.

Going along following your phone to a bunch of 1/1 caches, all micros, won't teach you a thing.

One should attempt multicaches, so one can learn about inputting coordinates into their device, for example.

This may seem like some sort of phone-game, but it isn't. There are other cachers who are going to be looking for your cache, and will be annoyed to find that the coordinates are wrong, or the container is poor, etc.

This is very bad advice from someone who does not understand geocaching at all.

Some people might get the hang of it that quickly, but it seems that the "phone cachers" don't. They don't seem to realize that it's more than just a phone game of finding coordinates.

There's a lot more to it than that.

"Finding" 2 or 3 of the same thing, if you actually find the true cache container, won't teach you anything if you find 2 or 3 of the same type of cache.

Of course, if you don't actually find the real cache container and sign the log book, those 2 or 3 "finds" don't mean anything.

Loading coordinates into a phone, then hitting the "found it" button isn't geocaching.

Lots of different aspects to look at here. Some negative some positive. I think it could be a turn off to some when they see others giving not so nice replies to something they are interested in. How do I know if I will enjoy geocaching 3 months to a year from now unless I keep at it? I find it fascinating and am interested in finding some more, the two I found weren't amazing, but I am sure I'll find some better. Just because I asked how you hide one doesn't mean I am about to run out today and do it. I was asking for future reference, but apparently some need that in writing before assuming. I am using the geocache app for iPhone which I don't find to be that great, and the computer as that has more accurate information imo than the phone. I also didn't know if I want to pay 9.99 for the app version that isn't free. Word of advice to the veteran geocachers, you too were noobs once, so bestow the same kindness you once looked for. How will anyone learn without the advice and help of others? Rant over. Thanks for the feedback

I was a noob back in December 2001. Waited 3 months, travelled hundreds of miles to find a handful of caches (there were only a handful in my 200 mile radius area back then). By 3 months I knew I was hooked and wanted to also be a cache owner for hopefully years to come. There are sooooo many who get excited about the game, love love love it, plant a cache or 2 within the first month of playing, then just as quickly we never hear from them again. The abandoned cache accumulates DNFs, then NMs then finally after about a year it gets archived by the reviewer.

I would advise waiting 3 months. Get to know the game. Read the guidelines. Read the forum posts. Read what people like and don't like. Get to know containers. Start looking for a good place to hide a cache, one you would be proud to introduce to cachers. Create a good cache starting with a quality water tight container. Create your cache submission without submitting it for review. And when the 3 months are up and you're sure you're committed to this hobby for the long run, submit that cache and reap the rewards and responsibilities of cache ownership. If 3 months is too long a wait, are you sure you are committed to the responsibility of cache ownership?

Nothing in writing necessary.

Maybe it's because you said in your first post...

Wasn't an assumption. Seemed pretty clear to me.

You forgot the step of actually hiding the cache. It MUST be hidden before you click "SUBMIT."

And you seem to have no idea why it has to be reviewed.

Anyone who is new to it should participate and can hide similar items.

Hide all that you want. Whether you can get it listed on geocaching.com or not is a different story.

The review process is to determine whether or not you followed the guidelines (all of them) in placing your hide.

Don't read the guidelines -- trust me on this -- and you'll never get a hide listed on the site. It is the reviewer that has the button that lists the cache placement online.

Go ahead... hide 'em, and enjoy nobody finding them. You'll soon tire and leave due to frustration... as have others before.
