[Bug or feature?] List of recently viewed caches is back by default

I just noted that unfortunately the list of the 5 most recently viewed caches is back on the Quick view page and also the checkbox on the account page where one could switch off this list which annoys many cachers.

I'd appreciate very much if we got the old option to switch off the recent list back.

Hmm, it still seems to be working the same for me. I don't see the recently viewed section on my Quick View page, and the setting is still available under my Account Details > Your Preferences (unticked in my case).

Okay, scratch that. I just visited my Quick View page again and the recently viewed is there. Also, Account Details has disappeared from the Your Profile menu at the top, so I can't even look to see if I can modify the setting. Looking at the page source, I see:

Server: WEB14; Build: Tucson.Main.release-20141014.Release_208

...which would seem to indicate a release has just been rolled out. I guess this bug is related to that.

Can someone tell me how to switch this off please?

I understand a 'remove this' switch was introduced shortly after the "feature" itself was introduced... due to numerous complaints. I didn't have to use it at the time, having benefited from a small piece of code supplied by a user of this forum. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be working with effect from a couple of hours ago and I can't find the way that Groundspeak introduced to turn it off. I know it's there somewhere.

It has been there, but has been removed. The account page does not exist any longer.

I hope that a new method to switch off the display of the list will be offered, but I'm not sure whether maybe the removal of this switch is another example

of the recent trend to take away functionality.

Yes, in any case something new has rolled out (the profile looks differently and the DNF pride counters that some use are broken too).

Hopefully the removal of the option to switch off the display of the recently viewed caches list is a bug only and was not intended.

I guess you mean the option to hide it has disappeared?

While you're waiting for Groundspeak to fix this, add the following to your AdBlock Plus custom filter :

###ctl00_ContentBody_RecentlyViewedCachesPanel

I wasn't enthralled by it when first available, but I've found it useful. Especially when moving between devices.

Yes and no. I first thought that maybe due to the new release just the switch got reset to "display the list" for everyone.

My first observation was that the recently viewed cache list is back and the second then was that the option to hide the list were removed

at all.

I know about AdBlock. Thanks for the suggestion however. It might be helpful for some people.

New release notes is out.

I guess they either reset the switch, or it's still there but they're not checking the value any more.

Frankly I'm more upset about the DNF pride no longer working, but I can't legitimately blame them for that as it wasn't an official feature.

This is my DNF pride code now:

<img style="vertical-align:sub" src='/images/icons/32/dnf.png' alt='' height="16" width="16" />
64 Dnf Logs</div>

<div class='stat' style='position:relative; top:-195px; left:104px; height:0px;'>
<img style="vertical-align:sub; margin-left:5px" src='/images/wpttypes/2.gif' alt=''  height="16" width="16" />

Thanks! A problem though - your large image of the unmentionable metal disc with an offset hole that is a popular signature item obscures part of your profile page. Only a couple of pixels of "Email Address" is visible. This is on the latest Firefox on Windows.

I'm not sure if this is what you are referring to, but there is now a little gear wheel thingy in the top right hand corner - it still doesn't help with turning off the "Recently Viewed Caches" though.

I meant the old account settings page. I noticed the whell gear and moreover the edit command on the profile leads to the same effect.

It is incredibly annoying, and serves no useful porpoise.

I use that list every day. I wish I could make it longer.

Same here...not every day, though.

You can click the "view all" link on the upper right side of the list.

If one wanted/wants to see the list, one could and still can click on the link view recent. The option that had been available until the last release was very nice for those cachers who did not like that the 5 most recently viewed caches were displayed all the time on the top of another list which has a higher priority for many cachers.

Adblock can be used to hide the list, but it has the disadvantage that one needs to do that on every computer one uses and moreover than it applies to all users of the computer and is not any longer account-dependent.

Yeah, I go to "view all" every other day. If I could make the list on the main page 10 elements long, I'd only have to go to "view all" once a week.

I thought AdBlock preferences depend on the user profile? Do you use different user profiles / accounts if you share a computer with other people?

You are right with respect to the user profile.

However, if I visit friends who use Windows computers, I use the same account than they on the level of the operating system (there is only one account in their set-up), but of course I use my own geocaching account.

I see that there is a "View All" link next to the recently viewed caches that loads a "recentlyviewedcaches" page. It's not all the caches I've ever viewed but I guess it uses some unspecified definition of recent.

I also wish I could set the length of the recent logs list to something other than 30 days...and hide the useless "Stat Bar" and "Geocach Google Earth Viewer" sections, move the "Search Options" section up the page...in other words, let *me* customize the content on *my* profile page.

I feel unclean when using someone else's computer :) Yeah, I agree that AdBlock doesn't address all situations. It is only meant to work around annoyances until Groundspeak deigns to fix the issue at their end.

I don't quite get the "simplifying the settings" argument. The whole point of settings is to allow for customization, to please as many people as possible. This is not a one size fit all world. Some things should not be simplified.

For me it depends a lot on whose computer I use and what I'm going to do.

If it just means logging into my mail accounts at home, logging into the geocaching site and

visit some more or less harmless web sites, I do not have an issue with using a friend's computer.

I feel less comfortable to add bookmarks or something of that type which is also a reason why I'm not that happy with

the solution to carry out newest searchs by clicking on a bookmark link.

AdBlock is certainly a decent temporary workaround.

As they removed an existing option, I do not have much hope that the option or something equivalent will return.

If it were so, they also could easily say wait until the new my page becomes available.

I'm pretty pessimistic with regard to the future. I think that it is more likely that they will take away further functions that I valued than they will add something which is useful for someone like me. Their main intention now seems to be to appeal to users of mobile devices and to be come up with something they regard as fashionable and modern. But maybe I'm plain wrong. We will see.

Yes. That is what seems to be happening. GPSr users are curmudgeonly and out-of-date with the modern world. IPhones are the only way to go. So what if we have been the mainstays of the site for ten for twelve years? We are out-of-date. Really sad that we are being phased out.

AdBlock Plus, Procmail and GSAK do a decent job at keeping the frog crud at bay. It is unfortunate that we have to resort to glue logic to keep our beloved hobby web site useable, but if this is what it takes .. fine with me. I won't let a couple of [expletive deleted] MMMMMs (modern mobile media marketing modifications) ruin my favorite outdoor pastime.

Err, that quote was from Cezanne, not me! I got a bit confused seeing me being quoted for something I don't remember writing and it can't be something I wrote when drunk 'cos it makes sense :D

This list definitely comes in handy at times. It's nice to be able to hit my profile and then immediately see and go to a cache page that i want to look at again.

solution not fast enough. Give us an option to turn off "Recently Viewed Caches". Not like you have to write new code. Should be commands in old code to copy over.

As someone that writes code for a living it's not that simple. First of all, every user profile would have to contain a field which indicates whether one wants "Recently Viewed Caches" displayed. The requires a database change and likely database access code to persist that information. The display layer would also have to be changed to test the value of that field in order to determine which the list of caches should be displayed or not.

Well, that was already implemented. And then they took it away with a snap! So how hard could it be to bring it back?

Like... the browser history...

srsly, I open that, and see all the pages I recently viewed, in order. And if I want a specific cache, I'll filter for geocaching.com or whatever. Firefox, and other browsers, have autocomplete in the address bar too so it'll suggest a best match url which is sometimes even quicker if I know a word or two in the title.

Recent viewed caches, while provide a bit of a shortcut for some, is more a UI annoyance than anything, imo. Option to remove/disable is highly beneficial considering the amount of work it would be to (re)implement

As I mentioned earlier, it doesn't even have to be server-side. A short, quick browser-side option storing a cookie for whether the DOM object is displayed or not. If a greasemonkey script can do it, there is zero reason why it would have any effect on the server end.

And, yes, it was already there and removed.

I probably have a setting wrong but my IE9 doesn't show browser history. Autocomplete will come up if i start typing into the address field but there is no dropdown list of pages viewed. The problem for me is that many times, i just don't remember the cache's title when i'm trying to bring it up again. AOL does have the dropdown but i rarely use it for web surfing.

Seriously though, what is the problem with having recently viewed caches? I'm kinda at a loss as to why these 5 or 6 lines of text annoy anyone. I just scroll right passed them if they're not what i'm interested in looking at.

It's not a big thing, but I hid the recently viewed caches because they pushed content I cared about "below the fold".

Exactly this. I don't care as much as some people appear to, but it's still a minor annoyance that was optionally hidden before. I never use that list.
