+OusKonNé & Cétyla
Did anyone ever hear about geocaching cruises or ever geocache while on a cruise or sailing boat? +SUp3rFM & Cruella
We haven't done any cruise, but we have a cache placed - GCTC0Y - O Tejo é mais belo [Lisboa] very close to the port where the cruises stay here in Lisbon. It's very common to see logs from geocachers that go aboard on those cruises. I'm betting there are caches hidden on ports where you can easily walk to. Quote Link to comment
+usyoopers
We did a Mexican cruise last year- Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Cached in every port, had lots of fun. There is a cache on Stone Island in Mazatlan that you can get to by going on one of those very pricey day trips. They take you on a wagon ride to get there where you are dropped off to have lunch and do you own thing on the beach. I think it was about a 75.00 a head excursion. We took a water taxi for about 2.00 a head, found the cache, had the very terrific lunch of garlic and coconut shrimp (I think that cost 12.00) and explored on our own...wouldn't have known to do it that way without geocaching!! +butrflybec
I also found one or two while on a cruise this summer in Cozumel & Progreso, Mexico, but was also with non-cachers and they didn't share my enthusiasm at taking time out from site seeing and shopping to find a cache...however, a cache found at a bar with some excellent margaritas made them a little more "relaxed" about me grabbing a cache. +Buggheart
I think that sounds like lots of fun but I've never tried it. I'm kind of a newbie and the last time I cruised was earlier this year so I hadn't yet started. If I ever go on another cruise though I'd definitely try to work a cache or 2 into my schedule. We cruised to Key West and the Bahamas in May and visited Royal Caribbean's private island. It apparently had some nature trails that I didn't bother to check out as I was too busy laying in a hammock with a frozen drink in hand but if there was a cache there I might have made an effort to get my lazy butt up to go looking for it. Two years ago we cruised up the New England coast and into Canada where I'm sure there are probably lots of caches. Makes me sad to think of all the ones I probably walked right over and didn't know about. Oh well, gives me an excuse to go back. Edited September 18, 2008 by Buggheart Quote Link to comment

+hydnsek
Seattle is the departure point for many Alaskan cruises, and the Northwest forum gets lots of queries on what caches to pick up along the way. A couple years back, I vaguely remember someone trying to set up a caching cruise to Alaska, but can't find the thread and don't recall if it worked out or not. +The Blorenges
A UK geocacher actually set up an Event to take place whilst the cruise ship he was on was docked at Belize. It was rather a small, but select, Event. Balmoral's Belizean Cruise Cache. MrsB Quote Link to comment

A couple years back, I vaguely remember someone trying to set up a caching cruise to Alaska, but can't find the thread and don't recall if it worked out or not. Coincidently, I just got a call from our caching partners saying they were boarding the airplane to come home from Seattle, and we will pick them up at the airport in a couple of hours. We accompanied them to Seattle for a bit of caching and a bit of sightseeing. They left on a cruise and cached while the ship was stopped. We spent another day in Seattle. I have seen many logs in caches I've visited stating, "Quick cache while the cruise ship is in port." or words to that effect. Quote Link to comment
+Doc&Jo
We are going on a Conference cruise in May to the Grand Caymans and hope to do some caching. Seems like it will be a bit hard to find the time, but I so want to be able to have some out of the USA caches on my found list. Not sure how much damage to expect from all the storms. +Dread_Pirate_Bruce
I look for caches while cruising. I even hid a cache in one port, but it keeps getting muggled. Note: There is a cache aboard the Diamond Princess. It is not listed on geocaching.com because there is no fixed lat/lon. But it is on the ship. Quote Link to comment

+waypoint-willy
We have been doing cruises for about 10 years now, and when Geocaching reared it's ugly head it was a must to pack the GPS & PDA full of downloads! The problem I have found was pinpointing the areas for the downloads. The Caribbean wasn't too bad I just had to pinpoint an imaginary point somewhere in the Sea and request caches on a radius of 400 or so miles that would include all the Islands we would be visiting (there all in a semicircle) you may have to filter out 3 or more stars to give you 500 caches. The Med & Red Sea are a bit more difficult, most of the caches are where you visit on your tours -- remote from the docks & even though the tour bus takes you to walking distance you haven't got the memory on the PDA to get every possibility, the times Ive kicked myself on returning home & checked out Google Earth!! The Cache on a route system looks good. A similar Cache on a Cruise would be brilliant Keep on Cruisin & Keep on cachin! Quote Link to comment

If someone is going to be on the Diamond Princess and e-mails me, I'll explain where to go to find it. But, for what its worth, the cache is at as high a point on the ship as passengers can access. It is plainly visible from quite a ways away and from many angles. In fact as one goes onto the deck, it is in the direct line of sight. It is one of those caches that looks like it belongs there, but is just there. Once one spots it, one can grab it and replace it even with other people nearby. Quote Link to comment
C-Ker1
My sister and brother-in-law took a cruise earlier this year and picked up a few caches around the Mediterranean. Personally, I think it would be cool to go on a cruise that actually included a geocaching excursion to interested passengers. Quote Link to comment

+geocruise
I've cached on the our last two cruises to Alaska. There are lots of walk n grabs in all the ports. I've run into other cachers on the trail in the ports. Then we cached together when time permitted. Very neat deal. We are taking a western Carib cruise next month and have my PQ ready to go. I've also contacted a cacher in Belize to be my maintenance partner for a couple of caches I hope to plant there. I wish I could get permission to hide some caches in in Costa Maya since there are none there. But there's not a cacher in the area to work with. I'm all for a caching cruise. Quote Link to comment
+2ofHis
We have cached on our last 2 cruises; this past February, and Feb. '07. We found caches in Cozumel and Belize City. We would be VERY interested in a caching cruise. We don't have a problem fitting caching into the day's schedule along with the shore excursions; caching IS our shore excursion. Bill always wears his GC hat, and Rae wears her CITO shirt, while on board the ship, in hopes of attracting other cachers. Our last cruise, we got into New Orleans (the city from which we sailed) a day early, and spent the day caching! Snagged about a dozen in the French Quarter. Quote Link to comment
+Tatanka49
I'm leaving on my first cruise next week to the Caribbean. Who needs shore excursions when you have your trusty GPS? (I get to see the local color that most people never will.) Quote Link to comment
+pdxrose
LSwandering, Crescent Moon and I have our reservations made for an Alaskian Cruise for the Inside Passage, during 7 days, mid-Sept '09 out of Seattle. None of us have traveled to Alaska before, so we are checking that state off our list, and as we are all cachers we plan to find at least a few caches in each port. If we can manage an excursion besides caching, that will be an extra bonus. We love to explore local areas by visitng caches, which so often take you to historic sites and wonderful parks. I am hoping we could post somewhere on the ship that we would like to meet other cachers. It will be my first cruise, I'm looking forward to seeing Alaska and adding another state to my list. If you're going to be stopping in Ketchikan and have enough time for an excellent hike, then I highly recommend grabbing the cache linked below. The hike from the trailhead is 2 miles round trip, so you'll need to set aside enough time. This will be one that you will probably pass on just by looking at the caches in the area, but is well worth the hike. Check out the pictures that people have posted... the view is breathtaking! http://coord.info/GC5C2A Quote Link to comment

We did the Caribbean and found the only cache on Half Moon Cay with a beautiful view. The best time we had was in San Juan where the local caches takes you off the beaten path and we saw the most beautiful places. In St. Thomas we took a Island shore excursion and picked up a cache on one of our stops. We are leaving on another cruise on Sunday on the West Coast. I researched our stops and emailed a local guy who hide some of the caches for advice on transportation from the cruise ship. He gave me wonderful advice on different places to cache, transportation info and even offered to meet with us and take us caching! It takes a lot of research ahead of time before the cruise but it is well worth it! Quote Link to comment
