Hiding a Geocache

Hello all!

As a newbie I had a few questions regarding where I am allowed to place a geocache and if this would get rejected.

I work at a local ice-rink and thought of a really neat place to hide a geocache, however its inside the arena (which is open to the public) and wanted to start the process of creating it.

Would this be an acceptable cache?

Thanks a bunch! You guys rock,

First you would need permission by someone in charge of the place, not just someone who works there (you.) Second the people looking for it can't be required to interact with anyone. That means they can't be made to sign in, for example. (I'm sure that would be OK, but as the guidelines are written it can be enforced.) Then remember it wouldn't be listed as a traditional, since it's unlikely you'd get a gps signal in there, so it would be an unknown.

But all that aside were not the ones who publish caches. As your reviewer will make the decision, it's best to ask your reviewer.

At some point, accurate GPS coordinates must be an integral part of finding the geocache. While it is possible to generate (and use) accurate GPS coordinates for indoor locations (and other locations with no GPS reception), that isn't how most of the caches with indoor locations have worked in my experience.

One common approach is to use GPS coordinates to find information outside, and then to use that information to find the indoor cache container. Another common approach flips this around: you find information inside that is used to generate GPS coordinates, and those GPS coordinates are used to find the outdoor cache container.

Would geocachers have to pay a fee to find the cache? If so, the hide would not be allowed unless the rink is not commercial. A county-run park facility? OK. A business? Not OK. Owned by a local hockey association? Consult your local reviewer before you invest too much time in planning the hide.

I would suggest talking to a local reviewer. They are aware of local laws and they have a better insight on the guidelines, since they work with them everyday.

From what I've read, it does depends on what you are thinking about. Why are you getting people to that place? Is that place only a comercial place or does it hold some historical/cultural/social status? Quoting briansnat:

"When you go to hide a geocache, think of the reason you are bringing people to that spot. If the only reason is for the geocache, then find a better spot."
