Geocaching spots

Okay, I have a three day weekend comming next month (February) and I just HAVE to get away from Long Island for awhile and it seems like the perfect excuse to go on a mini-geocaching vacation. I look for an opportunity to get off the horrible island whenever I can! I don't really want to go more than 150 mile (one way) away as then it is too much driving.

Are there any places that are good places to go geocaching that you can suggest within 150 miles of NYC?

Not in cities, but in parks where I can get out in the woods and have a breath or two of fresh air and do some hiking without the constant buzz of traffic, planes, and the like?

Mt. Beacon, Harriman, Catiskills, Shawangunks, High Point, NJ (the TriState area), Centralia, PA and surrounding area (coal country), Pocono Mtns,

150 miles limit you to the tri state and PA.....

Ummm, thanks but could you narrow it down a bit? Which place is your favorite? Lots of trees, beautiful scenery, great photo ops would be my ideal place.

Hi SnowBird690.. If I were taking a mini caching vacation, I'd do my best to limit the time I spend behind the wheel getting to my destination territory; especially in your case (to make it from the town identified on your profile page as home - Holbrook, NY, to just the Hudson River, you're already using up nearly half of your budgeted 150 mile range).

So perhaps it would be a good idea to aim at something a bit closer to the NYC Hudson River crossings - such as the South Mountain Reservation - or its neighbor a few miles away, the Watchung Reservation.. both located in the vicinity of Summit, NJ. Both places offer nice views - a wide variety of terrain to choose from - as well as a fairly high concentration of caches of all kinds. Lots of fun cache series out there too - if you care to challenge yourself and follow a themed group of caches. Lots of easy stuff close to one another too - if what you're after is a sort of "numbers run".

I think she was just pointing out that there are tons of great places in range. Being in Islip pretty much makes us neighbors in this game. I leave the island every Saturday. There are too many to pick a favorite but Ramapo Reservation/Ringwood Manor in NJ is a great place to start, Harriman State Park is another. I usually do day trips so I can't say how to make a 3 day weekend of it. Adding to Avgraphics comment, you could spend a month between Watchung and South Mountain Reservation and never get bored.

I support the recommendation of the ridges above Beacon. Not a long drive for you, very photogenic views in accordance with your preference, good hikes of variable distance and difficulty, and the potential to get a dozen or more caches in a single hike (upwards of twenty if you're in really good shape).

This old event page will give you some information about the area and the usual cache-map link. Also check out its gallery.

One last bit to get you really salivating over the place: on a single eight-mile hike there, I passed a disused old railroad, the ruins of a summit resort casino, a Revolutionary War monument, a climbable fire tower, and great views of both Storm King Mountain and the Beacon Bridge. It was probably the best single-day hike I've ever done.
