Garmin etrex 30x power up issue

Ladies & Gents,

I am experiencing an issue with a brand new Garmin etrex 30x where I transferred some Adventures to my new device now will not power up. When removing the etrex from the USB connection I made sure I used the PC 'safe to eject' feature for the GPS, then placed fairly new batteries in to power up, nothing, so change the batteries (new) and still nothing, removed the batteries and plugged back on the PC via the issued USB cable and nothing. Very upset.

Any comments leading to assistance / help will be great or is this continuing thing of the Garmin etrex owner. Garmin closed for the night.

Cheers.

Wondering if it has something to do with the Adventures file(s) and maybe something corrupted in there. I haven't used them yet, so can't comment on how they work, but you might try a hard reset.

To do a reset on the eTrex line, I believe you do the following:

1. From off, press in joystick button and hold down.

2. While still holding down, press power button.

3. Screen prompt should pop up, asking if you want to erase all user data.

Also, if that doesn't work, then powering on with the USB cable attached and joystick pressed up, forces mass storage mode. (Per Garmin forums)

FYI -- if you are able to eventually get the unit to power on and connect to the computer, it is a good idea to make a backup of the entire GPS folders on your PC, just in case.

Good luck, hope you're able to get it working!

Is it completely dead, or does it start to power up then shut down or go dim? Did you put the added files on SD card or internal memory? If on SD card, remove the card and try to power up.

Thanks alanb, I did install some Adventure data but I followed Pacific NW reset info and now powers up. Cheers, Matt

Pacific NW, your instruction set helped as a reboot, at a closer look at the data fields on the reboot screen it shows that P Map Chk 'Failed', maybe a bigger issue. I'll review the link you have pointed me to. Cheers elgeym

Just as a quick point of advice ...

When you add files to your device, put them on a SD card instead of internal memory. That way if there is a problem where the new files are preventing boot up, you can just remove the SD card and you are back to your original setup.

Hi alanb, I will be taking on your advice regarding the external micro SD card, your advice has been greatly appreciated. All up & running now. Regards
