+DragonsWest
What enquiring minds want to know is if Groundspeak will be implementing support for this mysterious new GGZ format which will be coming out with the new Oregon 600/650 line of GPSs. Does Grounspeak know of it? Will it be supported? If and when? adv10Qance Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
I was wondering the same thing - what is it? Will the site support it? Is it proprietary? Quote Link to comment
+DadOf6Furrballs
GGZ files are used with the Garena gaming system. I believe they're custom skins. So no, there's no need for this site to support them in Pocket Queries, as they are 2 different animals. Quote Link to comment
+DadOf6Furrballs
I'm just going by what I found on Google. http://file.downloadatoz.com/ggz-file-extension/ What is File Extension GGZFile extension GGZ is a Garena skin file which is also considered as configuration files. The .GGZ file can be freely edited by any text editor. And the , , , , , , , , , are also the popular setting files. In fact, You don't need to open all these files. But if you need to open / editor or convert the .jpeg files and other files, you can use the supported softwares to open / editor or convert it. For example, And: http://fairplay.garena.com/showthread.php?320303-Guide-How-to-make-your-own-garena-skin I imagine that Garmin is using these files somehow to customize the screen. +The A-Team
I imagine that Garmin is using these files somehow to customize the screen. I think it's more likely that Garmin is coming up with a new proprietary file format to contain caches/waypoints, based on the context posted by StarBrand. It's just a coincidence that it uses the same file extension as someone else's file format. You can go to Filext.com, look up nearly any file extension, and there will be several different programs listed with completely different file formats, with only the extension being common between them. Could be. If that's the case then there would still be no reason for GC to add support for a proprietary Garmin only format. Quote Link to comment

Yeah, I saw some speculation on another site that the new file format could be for use with Garmin's caching site, in which case there wouldn't be any sense in Groundspeak supporting it. We'll just have to wait until we can find out more about it. Quote Link to comment

If they are working on support for it they have been in communication with Garmin well in advance of this thread (one assumes, anyway.) As OpenCaching.com is Lilliputian compared to Geocaching.com I expect it is greatly within Garmin's best interests to work with, not against, Groundspeak. To sell a pile of these new units, were I working in marketing at Garmin, I'd endeavour to see how best our units can work with the Brobdingnag, not the Lilliput. Quote Link to comment

However, the text below (from another site, posted by a user who spoke directly to a Garmin employee) implies that it won't be necessary for Groundspeak to offer it for the devices to be useful, but it would be beneficial for Groundspeak to do it in order so "keep up" with Opencaching.com... "They are not withholding the programming and it will be available for Groundspeak to use, but it will require Groundspeak to do some work on their end to provide the option on GC.com, if they choose to use it. Since it is a Garmin feature, it would also force other GPSr manufacturers to upgrade their software/hardware accordingly to also keep up. It will work with OC.com immediately, but no surprise there. It CAN eventually work on other sites if those sites upgrade software on their end." Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
As someone who's been (rude other thread) "living in a cave for 8 months", I have a question... I was thinking of one of those 600 series as a birthday present for CJ. The way it is now, it won't work out-of-the-box for anyone but "that other site" that we'd never consider - correct? Focing others hands by this new format seems like a losing move to me. All the problems with constant updates are already giving them mediocre reviews. Is this a, "we're #1 and we're taking our ball and heading home, unless..." kinda thing? Thanks for explaining this to the cave man. - I'm going to attempt a foot protection device I'll call sandals now. Made fire last week. Quote Link to comment

AZcachemeister
So (apparently) it's another attempt by the lightweight monkey to out-maneuver the 800 pound gorilla. Why don't they play nice and just stick to making top quality GPS receivers? I wouldn't buy a Garmin GPS if my Geocaching career depended on it. (Well, maybe an older unit off of EBay...) I'm highly interested in the new units because I'd be able to dump entire states sets of benchmarks in there (yeah, I'll have to write the conversion myself, but that's small potatoes) and leave them, rather than this confounded juggling within a 5K limit. Warts and all I do like the Garmin units, but have learned to be very cautious with upgrades. Back up everything before doing the upgrades, because I may be going back. I'm also rather funny about waiting to see what suffering others go through before going forward myself. Quote Link to comment
+Sages
I just bought a new GPSMap64s. It came loaded with 200,000 caches. I called Garmin support to ask if I could update this list and they said this is the new GGZ format file and can hold up to 6 million caches! I wonder if there is a way to do a query and create a GGZ file. Quote Link to comment

I wonder if there is a way to do a query and create a GGZ file. Not directly from gc.com. Pocket query to get all the caches you want, load them into GSAK, and then download them to your GPS from there all in one go. Works a treat. There is no point in gc.com supporting ggz files if the pocket query limit is 1000 and I don't see them increasing that limit to 4+ million anytime soon. Quote Link to comment
