Hamilton, South Lanarkshire - Scotland - Tracking help

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am going to write a long post, but I am also going to put a To long Did read version at the bottom so you don't have to read the whole thing.

I spoke with my family at hopefully our first of many family camping trips. I am from Nova Scotia Canada. My great Grandfather on my mothers side came across on a board when the Brits had decided that they needed to populate some of the colonies. I will spare you the history lesson as I'm sure many of you already know this history all too well.

My mother would always go on about how "if I won the local lottery, I want to visit Scotland, Specifically Hamilton where Grand daddy is from" She would tell me about the relatives who we have over there and how much she would love to see it, There are many different stories about my great grand father and how he always was a kind man, but a strict man. My mother spoke nothing but praise for him and from the stories I heard they are nothing but truth from many people.

I November the 4th, 2014 at 1:30 AM ATL I got the worst call anyone can get which is my father calling to let me know something was wrong with my mom. I arrived at our family home only to see my mom covered in a white sheet. It was like something out of one of her crime drama's that she liked to watch, Criminal Minds or other things. I could not understand him as I thought he was someone calling and I really couldn't make him out as he sounded like someone who was drunk and had the wrong number, I wish that were true that day and every day since.

My mother passed from massive heart attack, there was nothing that could be done, she was only 60 years old. I look through pictures and notice that she lost a lot of weight and all the signs were there. I really didn't notice it until some months after it.

I am not the type who cries at funerals or anything, but I would cry behind closed doors, I have tears in my eyes as I write this up. I miss her everyday, as she was the staple which held our family together, calling family dinners, having people over, people always visiting her house. Her and my father were together since they were in the teens. My father visits in the morning, afternoon and evening at her grave site.

The winter was hard for my father as we had a record breaking amount of snow this year. They do not plow out the local grave yard, and never have most likely due to snow being dumped on loved ones or damaging of headstones. This valentines day I knew it would be hard on him so I decided that I would get my shovel and shoveled through the ice and snow and the 6-10 feet drifts. I have a small driveway and kind of get tired just doing that, but that day I was unstoppable, I with a shovel bought at wal-mart shoveled my way through 3-5 KM of snow ranging from 6 to 10 feet, a lot of ice and a lot of snow. I walked down to my brothers house and handed him flowers, telling him to go put these mom's grave. He asked if someone had plowed out the graveyard on valentines day, I smiled and said "Yes, someone had" and I've never seen him move so fast in all my life. He was up and dressed and out the door with my car keys in hand quicker than two shakes of a lambs tail. He went to visit my mom many times that day and it really helped him. I believe it helped me as well, I can't explain it, but it helped me in ways I cannot describe, to help my father in that way.

I want to visit Hamilton someday as my mother did not get to visit the one place she always wanted to visit. I'm not sure when or how, but I will find a way. I just want something to put on her grave

Now that you have the backstory of why I am doing this. I will explain I am looking for. I am looking for someone in Hamilton Scotland who is willing to help me by creating a cache, either by a hillside or the river. She always wanted to see the hills, but the River Avon would suffice as well.

I'm going to make my own trackable to, hopefully, travel to a cache placed in the Hamilton area and then travel back to my mothers final resting place. I will start the trackable close to where I grew up at. I would really be eternally grateful if someone would be able to help me with my trackable and help the very least something of my mom's get to Scotland and then back to her.

I thank you for reading all this and hope you all have a great rest of your day, I don't know if I will be checking the forum until Monday as I have a few things to take care of this weekend.

TL:DR - My mom passed, I would like to send a trackable object of hers to Hamilton and then back to her final resting place. Looking for help from a cacher around Hamilton, Scotland.

DONT send out anything that has a sentimental value as a trackable item.

Things do go missing. The more sentimental value it has to you, the harder it is when it goes missing...

Maybe send a keyring, with a photo in it?

That's all it will be, there is an old keyring that she had which was hanging. Truth be told we do not know what it is for, we believe an old car, but we don't know. Another thing was just a set of dart flights that were around. I'm leaning towards a keyring with a photo, I am not sending anything of any value at all.

I appreciate your concern as I'm sure this happens to people a number of times. It is more about the journey of the object rather than the object itself. I was thinking a keyring or a button with her picture on it, you hit it right on the head my friend.

Firstly, let me express my condolences on the loss of your mother. It sounds like you have been through a tough time.

I don't live in or particularly near Hamilton, and so it would not make sense for me to attempt to set a cache there myself. However, although I have taken on board that you seek a new cache, had you considered starting your TB from an existing cache? There are a few on or close to Avon Water in Hamilton, or there's a multi called Palace Permutations (http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCN9E2_palace-perambulations) which starts right by the Low Parks Museum, a place which offers a very good representation of life in Hamilton in former days, and therefore the historical element might be a nice link with your mother and forebears. Whether or not you run with my idea, the museum is definitely worth a visit; they also run the visit to Hamilton Mausoleum which is a must-see.

Good luck in your quest.

Thank you kindly. We were a very close family and mom was always the one who held it together truth be told.

You know I've never thought about that. It sounds like a perfect Idea. I am going to look at this idea more when I get home. I mean this seems like an amazing option and I kind of looked around Hamilton, but without knowing much about it. I mean I have a lot of my fathers side of the family but my mothers side is hard to track down, only because everyone loved Grand daddy do I know he came from Hamilton. I think the TB starting there in that place sounds great! I'm going to do more research as that's always how I do things.

I appreciate your input and this is really awesome feedback.

Hello, I am in Glasgow so not too far from Hamilton. I could possibly help with dropping a TB in a Hamilton cache.

One thought I had was you could post over a TB, with your key ring etc attached then someone could buy a Hamilton key ring (if such a thing exists?) and attach it to your TB so both could travel back to yourself in Nova Scotia.
