Ninarina68 Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Dear all, I am giving my cub scouts an intro to geocaching tomorrow with the idea for another week for them to find our local caches and then in turn for them to decide a cache in our local area for me to set up. has anyone got any files/games or paper resources that I can use to make it fun for them.. +whh0 Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Hi there, We have done this with our Brownies in the past but rather than have them find local caches we set a multi up around the hall grounds where we meet. That way they get the idea about how to use the GPS and what geocaching was all about. The risk if you use existing caches is they will bring all their friends back to see where the cool treasure box is hidden and it may get lost/broken either by accident or intentionally, most of which people would have invested a great deal of time and money in to. We started off by looking at compass points and maps and how the two were related and played a game where all points of the room were a different point on the compass. +AliJam Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 I did this with our scout group, first I got them to look for some caches I had placed using a pirate treasure map, and asked them to record how successful that method was. Next week we used os map and grid references, with clues again getting them to record success or failure to find. Third week it was using a GPS and again with clues also you guessed it recording success and failure. We then spent a little while talking about the merits of each method. All caches were placed just for the troop. However I did have the patrol with the most finds place a cache out with the person who was our resident cacher at the time. This was some years ago long before I got into caching. It took some planning but it was a good way to show them how important map skills are even when using technology. Quote Link to comment

We have a lot of landowners in the UK and sensitive land areas where caches can only be placed with proof you have permission or in some cases, caches are not allowed. It's all in the Wiki including the maps that we use when reviewing. You can 'pre-review' an area yourself before submitting a cache to make sure it meets all the local guidelines.
