Which is your most 'favorited' cache?

I find it interesting that the cache I own with the most favorite points is my 'Walking Dead' themed cache - Terminus: Sanctuary For All

I suppose it's the fact that it's current and relevant to pop culture, but it's not even that great a hide and the best vantage point requires people to wade through kudzu and garbage.

So which one of yours has the most favorite points and why do you suppose it's popular? Is it the container? The style of hide? The location? Something else?

How about all of the above? I can only guess why people would favorite one of my caches but the one that has the most has a common theme for the cache name, the location (it's behind a business with the same name), the container (which mimics a real live thing), the hiding spot (which looks like the kind of spot where one might find the real live thing), and cache description are all tied together. Add to that a pretty spot that is easily accessible and owners of the property that have been very geocacher friendly and I'm not surprised it gets a high percentage of favorite point. Unfortunately, it still manages to get a few TFTC logs.

My most favorited cache is a paddle cache. The lake on which it is located is in a park that was used for the geo-community's summer picnic this year. So it got a lot of visits and favorites during that time. There's certainly nothing "wow" about the container.

On the other hand, the caches that I'm most proud of don't have near the percentage of favoriting that I would expect. (Sniff, sniff :) )

My most favourited is I Love It When A Plan Comes Together! People like it for the theme, style of puzzle, and the final location. Unfortunately, since it's a puzzle, I can't allow any photos from the final and you can't see what the view's like.

A more recent hide of mine, which over time will likely give the other cache a run for its money based on Favourite Point performance so far, is Barrel of Laughs. This is all about the container. If you want to see what it looks like, see the gallery. I didn't want to deny spoiler photos because I was hoping people would have some fun with it.

Edit to add: If anyone's interested in learning more about I Love It When A Plan Comes Together, send me an email and I can give you a description and <spoiler alert>yrg lbh urne gur nhqvb.</spoiler alert>

Indeed, it is!

I used to give my geo-friends grief when they would get hung up on their caches not being favorited enough. Or when the percentage favorited wasn't as high as they thought it should be. Now I find myself doing the same thing, though to a somewhat lesser degree.

Two of my fellow Lackeys found four of my caches this past week and I didn't get any favorites out of them. Might have to get even with them for that B)

I loved that cache. We visited it on our way back from 3IEE. I'd only seen something like that once before- in Iowa earlier this year. But yours was more enjoyable, both because of the theme (I LOVE that show) and the final location.

Would really like to construct something similar someday. Not sure if I have the technical know-how, though!

My most favorite cache (now archived) is Mission 9: Tunnel of Light, which was an APE cache and so popular for that reason. My most favorited active caches is Portal to the Past, mostly because it is a virtual and gets tons of finds (the favorite percentage is pretty low overall). The most favorited active cache below that is Camels Prairie Stash, which is the oldest in Idaho and thus gets a bump from that. After that I have another old traditional with a nice view, followed by an EarthCache, and then a traditional that is part of a GeoTour.

I've actually been working on an algorithm to help identify "good" caches and am trying to find ways to quantify that. So far I have an equation that is factoring in rate of Favorite Point awarding, total number of Favorites, log length, and images per log (with different weights for each). It will be interesting to see what people post here and see the various ways quality is being identified.

My highest favorited cache is a virtual in Glacier National Park. So, yeah. That's why it's popular. My top four favorited caches are all virtuals.

Top o' the Pass

My top favorited physical cache is popular because it's the seventh oldest active cache in Washington State, and is part of a Challenge cache.

Valley View

I hope to see your virtual caches at Glacier. I was at Glacier just before caching was invented!

I find it humorous that my two most favorited are rare cache types: My Webcam and My Letterbox Hybrid. The webcam is on Mount Washington, and the Letterbox Hybrid is in Central Park in NYC, and is the only Letterbox Hybrid on Manhattan. The third is far lower, but is one of my early caches atop the Palisades in N.J. with a view across the Hudson River to NYC. They have been around a while. 2004-2007.

I found a stunning spot that nobody seems to know about*, and put an ordinary ammo box right there. People seem to like it.

* Serious fishermen (see photo) and hard-core river runners - and now cachers - seem to be the only folks that know about the place.

Alberta still has a few wild spots. B)

I hope that you don't give total number of favorites too much weight. It might make sense when comparing caches in the same general area, but not so much when comparing caches which might get dozens of finds in a month with a cache in an area that gets relatively few visitors. For example, I recently a cache that has 66 favorite points, which isn't much compared to some of the numbers you'll see in Europe. The 66 favorite point cache is at the edge of an active volcano and was placed in 2005. There are lots of urban micros in Prague less than a year old with three times as many favorite points.

Part of the challenge is finding the balance. I'm currently giving more weight to percentage than to total number, but that ends up skewing results toward caches with fewer finds. How do you quantitatively distinguish between the cache that has 1 FP and 1 find by a PM in two years versus the one that has 9 FPs and 10 finds by PMs in the last week?

Yep, a problem. More physically & mentally demanding caches tend to attract the folks who like that stuff, a self selecting finder group - and others who aren't equal to that terrain or thought process won't really enjoy them - high percentage points notwithstanding.

----------

By number, my most favorited cache is a Challenge. You can only use one Traditional for the list and need 8 cache types, makes it a tad more difficult, while still leaving cache seeker gobs of options. I think this is the key to well liked challenge. As a cache, it's a pleasant hike in a pretty place to an ammo can.

By percentage (of caches of mine with more than a few finds) it's The Old Bridge http://coord.info/GC3HJ7E

People like that they get wet for it, and that they really are going to run an alligator off the bank first. A certain thrill to that. Enough effort to remember, with a find darn near guaranteed. Another pretty place, another ammo can.

--------

:D Oh yeah...here's one of mine - http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC39Z4B_skirt-lifter see spoiler pic. I was surprised at the underwhelming response to this. I think it was far enough off trail and out of the way to limit visits, while being unchallenging enough in the hike and find that the sort of folks who did make the trip didn't remark it much. She was dying of loneliness, so I put her out of her misery.

My most favorited cache is a virtual, A Murder Mystery and just behind it, another virtual, The Great Falls of the Passaic. The former is kind of a "Wow, what the heck is that doing here?" Kind of thing. The latter is a scenic waterfalls in an historic location, in the middle of a city. Though cool spots I think the real reason they have so many favorites is that they are virtuals. They tend to draw favorites.

My most favorited real cache is Rock, Stock and Barrel. It's a pretty cool rock formation, with ancient petroglyphs (which I have never been able to make out) next to a residential neighborhood. It's a nice enough cache, but I think I have many far better ones.

By percentage, it's Maneater with 48 percent. It's old and was placed well before favorites were introduced, so I'm sure the percentage would be somewhat higher had I placed it later. It's a tough cache to get to, placed in a talus field at the base of a cliff with huge boulders (some the size of a Volkswagen) and a pretty nice view from the cache site.

Reading back over mine, I realize it sounds like I put down a crappy hide...but really I put it where it is because that spot offers the best vantage point for viewing 'Terminus' from the television show. It's also the best spot in the public right of way.

As for which of mine is MY favorite...

For puzzles AND hiding style, it's a toss-up between three:

Temblor at the Hoosgow: http://coord.info/GC4Z0W7 - My first stage is kind of an unusual "hint" located on an overpass where folks have been hanging padlocks on the fence.

That Which We Call a Rose: http://coord.info/GC57R90 - The puzzle took a while to develop, but it ended up being successful once people figured out what to do. The hide has some good camo, too.

Veterans Memorial at Brook Run: http://coord.info/GC5186H - Another fun puzzle using on-site personalized brick pavers. The hide just seems to fit in perfectly. I had something in my car that actually just seemed to be made for the hiding spot, quite by accident.

For location, I have three in a park near my home that all are along some cool trails. My favorite of them, though, is an old mailbox that fit perfectly into a large hollow of a dead tree. Constitution Lake Deliverance - http://coord.info/GC4XHEN

I checked out briansnat's Maneater, most favorited by percentage. "It's old and was placed well before favorites were introduced."

I observe there what I see with my own hides with any cache higher terrain, not in a power run, that find rate falls each year.

2006 - 7

2007 - 5

2008 - 4

My most favorited (by number and percentage) is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

It is a Wherigo cache.

What people seem to like about it is how the location fits with the story as played out in the Wherigo. You wouldn't think that a park in southern England would fit with they story, but it works. That and laughing at my doing various character's voices (if they have a smartphone).

Fallen Civil War Soldiers from Decatur County ... an easy two stage multicache.

Most of my caches are cemetery caches in my county in which I point out the graves of Civil War soldiers as well as other soldiers. In order to do this I had to basically rewrite our county's count of Civil War dead cause it was FUBAR'd beyond belief. The library then asked me to print it as a book. I gave a copy to them and all of the surrounding county libraries. The first stage is a piece of laminated paper that gives the call number to the book. Attached to the back is the log, one of those old cards you used yo have to sign to check out the book.

Favorite points are because of the container design.

My most-favorited cache is Hardscrabble Rattlesnake Gulch.

I am guessing that cachers feel challenged by the short steep scramble to get it, yet it is only 100 yards or so off a state highway, not in the backcountry.

Mine is Brenton Point, a cache I adopted. It is RI's oldest, so I think that is why it gets Fav'ed all the time. It's in a nifty little state park, with some views out to the Atlantic, but nothing really stellar IMO.

The top three I placed are:

The Suspense is Killing Me - A clever multi that makes you think a little

Goddard Park (and Grab) #5 - A P&G that's not a film can in a guardrail

Goddard Park (and Grab) #4 - Another P&G that's not a film can in a guardrail (I think this one is better than #5)

I mentioned that one recently, perhaps in a different thread.

What made it a favorite for me was partially due to it being RI's oldest. There are certainly better views near caches but the view from the park is nothing to sneeze at, and the nearby "mansion row" is pretty interesting. There was also somewhat of an intangible reason for my favorite point. I found it with someone that had never geocached before, and it was a great example of a cache to introduce someone else to the game. It was well stocked, and just the fact that people had been going to that spot for over 10 years, unbeknownst to the thousands of people that parked just a couple of hundred feet away while visiting the park, was really interesting to someone that knew nothing about the game.

My most favorited cache is also my only cache so far (GC4V0JJ). It doesn't get many visits, but most people seem to really like it. Since my cache is so far out of the way, I wanted to design it in such a way that people would feel that the trip was worth it and walk away with smile, not just a smiley. People have been very kind with their comments and I really appreciate it. I have emailed each person who has found my cache to thank them for coming all the way out here to find it, and most have emailed me back asking if another similar container is in the future. It is. I'm in the process right now of designing another one.

I've adopted out or archived all my caches for now (I'm trying to get organized enough to be a good cache owner again).

Molluscophobia is the highest of the caches I placed with 13 favorite points. This one is probably because the camo is a real snail shell with a rather realistic body hiding a nano cache inside it that lets it stick to the sign post.

Just Squidinga Around It's A... has the best percentage at 44%. This is a multi with a great view, ending with an ammo can. The field puzzle for it glows in the dark and cannot be solved with an app and no research is needed to do it.
