Wherigo iPhone App?

I've used it recently with three local Whereigos as a back up to my new Garmin Oregon 450. The Garmin keeps crashing. PiGo never did. Issues with the iPhone are (1) The battery runs down alarmingly (I have a portable recharge unit but it's a bit bulky in the pocket. (2) I am told you cannot upload cartridges as some cache sites require. (3) PiGo saves automatically which means there is no going back if you get it wrong.

I use this app on my iPhone. But it's been so long since I last loaded a cart that I seemed to have forgotten how! Do I take the 'garmin oregon' option, or the 'pocket pc' option? And can I download it straight to the phone, or do I need to first save it to my desktop and then save it to the phone via usb?

tnx!

You can do either as the only difference has to do with audio within a cartridge. For the iPhone, just stick with the "Pocket PC" option and you'll be fine.

To download directly through the app, go to the cartridge list screen and top the button in the upper-left corner. You will then see the option to download a cartridge from online. Do not forget: you need to be logged in to the Wherigo site to download a cartridge (don't worry; it'll prompt you if you're not).

Who is Pi-Soft Consulting, LLC?

They have a poor reputation on WOT(Web of Trust) http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/pi-soft.com/comment?src=addon-rw-viewsc#comment although I don't know why.

It would definitely make me think twice before installing the Wherigo app

Pi-Soft Consulting is the company name of the person behind the iPhone Wherigo Player. He originally created the iPhone Wherigo Player as "PiGo". Groundspeak contacted him around April 2011 and worked out an agreement where his player became the official iPhone Wherigo Player.

If you still have questions (at any time) regarding trusting the iPhone Wherigo Player or an action it performs, you can ask the forum community here; contact the author, spstanley, directly; or contact Groundspeak. spstanley is also on this forum.

So, is there an app that can run the carts?

I know of the geocaching.com app, don't know about Wherigo.

The free Wherigo app for iPhone downloads smoothly like other apps. You don't need a cable and a computer. Within the app you can search for cartridges and download them. Tried it with son today. Fun :) :)

In the last few days we've played two different Wherigo cartridges on our iPhones. One iPhone 4 and one iPhone 4S.

Battleship:

Whack-A-Lackey

While the iPhone seems to play the cartridges well, I'm not convinced it can consistently and reliably replace a full blown Garmin GPSr.

Consistent behavior:

-GPSr accuracy on the iPhone never got less than 16 feet on either model.

-There is a noticeable delay in the phone GPSr accurately tracking movement.

-Although both cartridges displayed an unlock code, neither displayed the cache location when the cartridge was successfully completed. This happened whether it was played at the posted coords or within the 20 mile distance allowed.

-Cartridge does not resume if apps were closed without a graceful exit. App consistently crashed after that, requiring starting the cartridge over from scratch.

Battleship behavior:

-Tracking delay. This was more annoying than crippling as the cartridge was not time sensitive. By using the Google maps display it was possible to go to a location and wait for the pin to catch up before firing at the ships.

-Cache coordinates not displayed even though cartridge completed. This cartridge was played at posted coords on a sunny day.

Whach-A-Lackey behavior:

-Cache coordinates not displayed even though cartridge completed. This cartridge was played at posted coords on a sunny day and also at the coords for the Battleship cartridge.

-Tracking delay and GPSr accuracy. This proved quite aggravating given the proximity and time restrictions on the cartridge. The best score I recorded on the Lackey mode setting was 619, and this was guaranteed lower than it should have been. On every game I had several lackeys that showed distances less than 5 feet and the unit would not register them as whacked, thus wasting precious time and also missing points. I was able to test out a version of the cartridge with a larger proximity to match the iPhone GPSr accuracy. Although it registered the lackeys more accurately, there were still some it refused to acknowledge.

-Lua Alert: not even sure what caused this but I saw it several times referencing "parameter is not a table"

As I said, the iPhone will play the cartridges which I am happy about, and most times the accuracy delay can be accomodated, but not getting the cache coords when a cartridge is completed is a problem. I'm not sure where the root cause for that issue is though.

I'll still keep playing them on the iPhone. We don't have very many in our home area and the iPhone will work for these, while we'll keep using the trusty 60CSx for geocaching. Not worth springing the bucks for a new Garmin just to play cartridges, even if there are a few other nice features. Besides, the iPhone Geocaching app from Groundspeak works quite well, and I can sync an offline copy of my GSAK database to use in iGeoKnife.

And keep in mind that some issues are related to the app programming, and some to the cartridge coding. Also Wherigo is essentially emulated on the iphone, as it doesn't have an inline parser; ie, the app doesn't understand the LUA source, it simply runs the executed code, whereas the garmin has full lua support, so presuming good cartridge programming, should run faster and better than via the iPhone app, by default. But yes, better GPS hardware will still certainly have a positive impact on the Wherigo experience :)

I've installed the Wherigo app on my iPhone, however, I can't figure out how to download the cartridges to the app. Help please. I go to Wherigo.com, I have my phone plugged into the computer, I click download, and am given 4 choices for download, Garmin or pocket pc. I'm stuck there.

So, I'm trolling an old thread here. Is Wherigo still an official Groundspeak App?

I doubt I'll be playing Wherigo on anything but an iPhone, if at all, but the app hasn't been updated in a year. Either it just works well or the Dev has abandoned. The app only has 5 reviews in that year.

Should a guy new to Wherigo jump into the game, or is this a dead idea?

I have had nothing but good experiences using the app. It has replaced my pocket pc/gpsr or Colorado as my primary Wherigo device. They are a fun part of this game, so give it a try!
