Hi,

My PC does not detect the connected Garmin GPS.- I use

MapSource 6.16.3. GPS is turned on and connected via usb cable

to the PC.

When I connect my Garmin GPSmap 60csx /SW version 4.00/ to

my laptop using Windows 7/64. I getting an error message 'device

not found'.

On Google Earth /6.2.2.6613/ my PC does not detect the connected

Garmin GPS. I get the message 'could not find the device Garmin'.

I installed new USB driver - page for the driver update:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/downl...ils.jsp?id=591.

I uploaded WebUpdater but My PC does not detect the connected.

I have uninstalled the software and drivers on many occasions and

reinstalled. I always get the same message 'device not found'.

USB cable is OK.

The Garmin device GPSmap 60csx worked OK on my old laptop

which uses Windows XP sp3.

Can anybody help!

Robert

You need to be in Mass Storage mode for MapSource to detect your memory card. You must NOT be in Mass Storage mode for the Web Updater to detect your 60csx. If you've been unable to get a connection either way, try a new cable or a new USB port. Using Win7-64 I was able to make both types of connection using MS 6.16.3 and Web Updater.

I see "GPS is turned on and connected via usb cable to the PC." in your post.

Maybe it'll make a difference, maybe not.... but do all the connections, THEN turn on the GPSr.

I have had problems before about having the GPSr turned on when making connection. Sometimes it recognized it, sometimes it didn't.

Turning it on after all hookups are made, the PC has never failed to recognize it.

This is not true. Mapsource can detect the 60CSx without having the GPSr in removable drive mode.

Since the 60CSx can be connected with USB or serial, I assume you are using the USB cable and have it plugged into the correct port on the computer.

But do run this test: connect the 60csx and PC together put the 60CSx into removable drive mode (Setup, Interface, USB mass storage) - the GPSr will display an icon that suggests it is in that mode and your computer should respond by setting up a drive (you can see it with Windows Explorer). If this does not work then there is a defect in either the USB port on the 60CSx, the port on the computer, the cable or one of the connectors on either end of the cable. If that is working fine, and you can copy files back and forth, then the problem is elsewhere. On rare occasions something has gotten Windows confused so the USB ports stops functioning and restarting Windows might help. I have also seen situations where a device was plugged into one of the USB ports that was causing the whole bus to not function right; so you might want to run tests with all other USB devices removed and the comptuer restarted to see if that clears up the problem.

If this test indicates that your hardware is OK, then try the following. Take the 60CSx out of USB mass storage mode (press the power button) and in Windows go to Control Panel, Device Manager - there should be a line for "Garmin Devices" and under that your 60CSx should be represented. If this is not present then something is wrong with the driver. Uninstall it, make sure you have the most up-to-date version and reinstall it. The best way to check to see if Mapsource is able to see the GPSr is to try Transfer, Receive and watch the dialog that comes up. After two or three seconds it should show the GPSr as the connected device.

Thanks Hynr for all possible implicit solution of my problem. I'll all processed and I'll communicate the results. I hope to solve the problem.

When I encounter an error like this, I like to use another cable in a different USB port, plug in the GPS, then power on the Map60CSx. Try all the USB ports on the computer, and other Mini-USB cables. No problems with Windows 7.

Big problem with my 60CSx, is the lose connection on the GPS, but I have other cables. Some reason the cable connected to the back of the PC is loose in the 60CSx but tight in the Montana, so I think it is that the 60CSx is 5 years old.

Another is that the driver may have been corrupted. Remove the drivers for the Garmin on your PC and reload them. I am not sitting at my PC, however if I remember correctly, after removing them you simply plug in and it will reload. Also, try hooking it to another computer or possibly a hard reset of your GPSr.

I am still not sure it may be the cable. If you have another for another device, try it. I have three or four cables that while they work on one device will not work on another for some reason.

Rob21, just to be sure we understand: when you ran the first test I suggested (having the 60CSx appear on your computer as a removable hard drive in Windows Explorer) are you finding that it is not doing that?

Assuming that this is the case and that you have tested the cable and various USB ports on the computer, then it would appear that something is wrong at the GPSr. Take a close look at the connector; does the cable connector slide on snugly and smoothly? If it seems loose, then that could be the problem; if you have to force it hard, then that also could be the problem

Let's try this: pull the SD card out, pull the batteries out. Get some fully charged batteries of the type that the unit thinks it has (Alkaline, NiMH,...) and now try the USB removable drive using the best USB cable you have (preferably one of the same type that you can verify with a camera, music player, etc.

If that gets you no further, then it is time to try the "master reset" of the 60CSx. (This clears your entire GPSr). Turn the 60CSx off and then hold down both the Enter button and the Page button while turning the unit on. If it still is not showing as a removable drive when the screen of the unit says that this is what it is doing, then you probably have to conclude that the hardware is bad.

It sounds like an issue with the device, however let me reiterate; I have 3 or 4 cables that will work with some devices and not others. In particular, I have noticed that on some of my Garmin units and a couple of our Nooks. Other devices, like my tablets and phones, seem to work with any cable. This shouldn't be, however for some reason it is.

If it is the device, chances are a connector, most likely on the device side, has a bent or broke pin. Some have fixed this themselves however they are fragile and break easy.

Have you talked with Garmin?

Hi,

I have the same problem (my pc not recognizing my gps) and when trying lifting up one of the bronze metal contacts it broke up on me in two pieces, the metal is so fragil and obviously I lifted it up a bit to hard. Any ideas as to where to find a piece bronze metal similar to the one I broke and also how to weld it back on to the printed circuit board?. Thank you.
