Magellan Explorist GC not downloading geocaches

Hello,

I just got a Magellan Explorist GC for my birthday and am having some issues. I have tried to directly download geocaches from geocaching.com and I cannot get them onto my geocaches menu. According to my Mac the geocaches are on my unit, but are not showing up on the unit itself. I have tried the way of pocket queries, but I do not like that they end up under my Waypoint menu. As I type this, I am downloading the updated software for my GPS, but am wondering if this will actually help with my problem or if there is no fix for it at all. Any help or input would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Shea

I have a Magellan Explorist but use a Windows-based computer, not Mac, so I don't know if my answer will work or not. I run a PQ, download the results then, with the GPSr connected to PC, I copy the results of the PQ into the Geocaches folder (not Waypoints folder) on the GPSr and everything works fine.

Good luck.

How do you copy the results into the GPSr folder? I only see a way to download as waypoints.

Use the "GPX File" button for a single cache and copy the file to the X:\Geocaches directory on the GPS. For a PQ, unzip the file. Copy the first GPX file to the X:\Geocaches directory and copy the second GPX file (the one that ends with WPT) to the X:\Waypoints directory.

Hope it's okay to put my post here rather than a new thread as I am having the same problem. I haven't used the Magellan explorist GPS for a few months and am unable to download anything to it today. When I click on download it's all greyed out so I have uninstalled and installed the program twice and rebooted, still no dice. I don't understand how to copy and paste the instructions etc.

I'm using a PC windows 7 with Chrome also tried Firefox, both up to date

many thanks

Not the "same" problem at all...

Consider rewording the colored portions:

What is IT that is "greyed out"?

What "program" have you uninstalled and installed? (...guessing that you mean Magellan Communicator)

What "instructions" are you trying to copy and paste?

Lastly... how is it you are trying to download -- Pocket Query or "Send to GPS"?

I am talking about the Magellan communicator and am trying to 'download to gps' so I uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times, and rebooted.

The 'download to gps' and 'check device' is greyed out, it it not clickable.

Sorry, I meant I didn't know how to copy and past the co-ordinates to the Magellan GPS. I can access the GPS file folders as they show up as another drive so could copy and paste the co-ordinates and instructions if I knew how. By instructions I mean everything that one normally sees when it's downloaded to the GPS, not just the actual co-ordinates or lat. long. Hope that is clear, thank you.

I tried again using I.E. (up to date) but still no dice.

I guess I'm done, I've tried again reinstalling the communicator but no dice.

First, make sure your software on your GPS is up to date.

I don't install my geocaches with the communicator. I like it for other things, but I make Pocket Queries, extract the queries to my computer, then open the directory for the GPX on my GC and copy from my computer and paste into the GC through Windows Explorer. Then I have to reboot the GC.

One bizarre thing I have sometimes seen is that if the Geocaches are too far away, the will not always show until you get closer. Once I have gotten closer to the geocache location and can see them in the GPS, then I could see them when I traveled back farther away. That seems like a glitch to me.

Open the cache page of the cache you want to download, then instead of clicking "download to GPS", click the button to the left of it called GPX File". A window will open, then select "save file" and click OK. The file will be downloaded on your computer wherever your downloads usually go. Find the downloaded file, which will be named the GC code, right click it and copy it. Then from your computer folder, with your Megellan plugged in, open the Megellan from the plugged in device icon and open the folder that says "geocaches", right click and paste the file there. Of course you shouldn't do this one cache as a time, just download the GPX files for all the caches you want to go find, then you can select all the downloaded files at once and copy them all at once, and paste them into your Megellan all at once. After making sure they're in your Megellan, I would go back to the download folder on your computer and delete the ones that you copied and pasted, just so they don't pile up in there.

Ignore my earlier post because I just found the fix and it worked perfectly. Go to this site: http://www.magellangps.com/, then click the support button. In the Search Support Center field, type in "Magellan Communicator not found" and click Search. It will bring up a link with instructions that will walk you through fixing the communicator to work with the geocaching website. It's just a matter of you giving the program permission to run and is a very simple fix.

When I connect the Magellan to my PC, it opens a Windows directory with all the folders on the GPSr. One is called Geocaches. I open that folder, then, after unzipping the PQ, I copy or drag and drop the files into the Geocaches folder on the GPSr.
