I don't get any kickback, and I don't own Garmin shares. I don't even own these models of GPSr.

I received my latest REI pre-holiday sales flyer. Oregon 600 will be going for $250 for members. 600 has no topo map, no camera, and no battery pack. Nov 14-23.

I also noticed that gpscity.com has a "BIG SALE" on the Oregon 650t for $400. This one has camera and 100k topo map as well as battery pack. Free shipping and no tax outside Nevada. I have no idea when this one will end. http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-oregon-650t.html

Do you know if the REI sale requires a coupon or code? I was planning on replacing my 60csx soon and this was one of the models I was considering. I'm not a member yet, but I was planning on joining and getting my new GPSr from REI due to their return policy. This would save me some $ to use for other gear.

No coupon necessary for the Oregon 600. Anyone know if you need to be a member to get the sale price?

Coupon code is FALLMEMBER for regular priced item, but you need to be a member. If you get it in store, you don't need the coupon code - they can check if you used the discount previously, and if not, they will apply it to your item.

You may also want to watch GPSCity to see if they match REI's price for the Oregon 600.

Thanks for that info! I forgot to ask one thing, does the REI one year return policy count for sale items? That was a prime reason for considering REI in case I don't find a problem till after the normal 30 day period. I know I could always send it to Garmin, but I've heard mixed feelings about their warranty work.

Yes, it does.

From what I heard, Garmin doesn't usually repair. Instead, they will send you a refurbished unit as replacement.

You don't need to be a member to get the sale price. However, a membership is $20 and lasts for life. You get 10% back on anything you spend (full-priced items, unfortunately the GPS on sale won't count) in the form of a dividend at the end of the year, and during every sale, you also get a 20% off one full-priced item coupon. Members also get access to Attic Sales (aka scratch & dent) where you can purchase returned items for cheap.

I do not work for REI nor do I represent them.

Do keep in mind that REI has changed their return policy somewhat recently. You have up to a year after purchase to return an item for any reason whatsoever. But... if there is a manufacturing defect, I believe you can return it beyond a year. Although not the same as the old days, this is still *much* better than buying elsewhere with only a 30-day return window. No connection to REI, just another member chiming in. Their prices are generally MSRP unless you catch a good sale, such as this one.

Thanks to this thread I am now the proud owner of a new Oregon 600. I was at the Berkeley REI at 10:05 this morning and snagged the only 600 they had in stock! :D I wanted a 650 for the extra memory, but at this price I will make due with a large mIcro SD card for my maps. Thanks to everyone in this thread!

Congratulations - hope you like it!

I see it available in a bunch of stores near me, tempting me *sigh*

To get you started, if you have specific questions, it is probably answered here : http://garminoregon6xx.wikispaces.com/

GPSCity has a bunch of videos that may be useful (I haven't watched, so I can't tell).

You will probably want maps. OpenStreetMaps is free. Go to http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and select "California" from the North America drop down. Click Download Map Now. Select osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip and save it. Open the ZIP file, copy the "gmapsupp.img" to the Garmin folder on your Oregon 600. If you're using microSD, create a folder Garmin in it, then copy the file into that folder.

Thanks Chrysalides, the wiki looks good, I'll check out the openstreet maps. I had a copy of city nav standing by. Managed to install the U.S. portion to the units internal memory last night. I have the West 24k that I'm going to put on a microSD today along with about 3000 caches. Still learning about profiles and such.

I think I like it!

Just use OSM for regions / countries you don't have maps for.

I passed by an REI store last night and I couldn't resist... so now I have one as well.

The belt clip for my 450 works just great on the 600, except I can't plug in the USB cable with the clip on. I do recommend the clip despite that - sure beats leaving it on the ground / bench when you're searching.

I didn't bother with profiles. After updating firmware, I just went to setup, main menu, and put geocaching on the main menu. Turned on WAAS/EGNOS. Set map to North Up. Set orientation to fixed portrait (the auto rotate was driving me nuts).

A couple of things mentioned by DragonsWest - the screen is extremely sensitive, and not as scratch resistant as Garmin would like you to think. I didn't test the screen toughness (I'm going to get a screen protector, however), but I did encounter random presses on the screen just by having it hang on my belt. If you press the power button for a brief duration, you can lock the screen. DragonsWest also mentioned his unit crashing a few times a day. Mine didn't crash, but I managed to get mine into a state where I can't see the 4 icons on the main menu page (swiping left / right multiple times didn't help).

I just received my ArmorSuit Military Shield from Amazon. It was just under $10 and I'm putting it on today before any extensive use. I have a GizmoVest on order also.

I set my user button for one press to toggle the screen on/off. I'm not sure if that is best, but it is easy. I like to hang my GPS from the pack strap and just let it hang if not in use. I figured I'm not looking at it then anyway. I'll see how that works.

Congrats on the new 600 Chrysalides! ;)
