Klevermind
I need help choosing between these 2 GPS units. I read almost all the reviews for both and I am still not sure which one is better between the two. I like the color screen on the Magellan, but I like the Garmin software and brand more. I will be using it 99% of the time for geocaching. Price aside, which one is better between the two? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have been reading about both for over a week and still can't decide. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+user13371
Price aside? Buy an eTrex 20. All the Garmin goodness you crave. AND a color screen. AND higher resolution. AND room for more Geocaches. AND a better basemap. AND the ability to add other maps. AND expandable memory. AND B006S3FDDC. Edited April 28, 2012 by user13371 Quote Link to comment

Klevermind
Stay away from the explorist they glitch out. I'm on my 4th return. Good to know. So now the question is... Is the 20 worth the extra $70-80 for someone like me that will use it solely for geocaching? The other two that I listed where only a $20 difference. Thanks for the replies so far guys! Klevermind
I will probably go for the etrex 20 just in case. It may be more money now, but I don't think I will need to upgrade anytime soon. I have a feeling that I may "outgrow" the eTrex 10 fast enough. I was hoping for the community to suggest the Magellan GC to be honest lol. It was only $20 more than the eTrex 10, has road maps, color screen, plenty of storage and is made for geocashing, but all those features are not worth it if the software and hardware are full of bugs. +jepp2
I admit I am biased because I have a 20. But I would strongly advise to not buying the 10. My main reason is the limitation about not being able to add maps. You will not be happy with the base map, and with the 10 you are stuck. I would have preferred the 30 but just couldn't justify the added cost for the 3 axis compass. I am extremely happy with the 20 and the maps and the storage card are definitely worth the added cost. davison357
Forgive me if I seem like a total noob but I'm very new to all this and am thinking of buying a GPS device for geocaching purposes. For one thing I don't really understand what you mean by 'adding maps'. What is this? How is it done? What is wrong with the original map? More importantly, what does the Magellan have that the Garmin etrex 10 doesn't have, and vice versa? Any help would be great. Sam Quote Link to comment
+gpsblake
I own both and paid cash for both, avoid the GC. Etrex 20 is a great unit. Quote Link to comment
+ShaunEM
I too have owned both, I replaced my GC with the etrex 20. I am very glad I did. Shaun Quote Link to comment
+Jeffc1020
I have owned the GC for a year, now the joystick is almost broken (rubber peeled off, won't "click" anymore). I am not satisfied. I'm actually looking to buy and etrex 10 because it is more reliable and much simpler (the GC's interface is slow and glitchy, and the gps takes too long to connect). In my opinion, don't go with the GC, it may be cool but it is not a very rugged and reliable device. -Jeff Quote Link to comment

How is the base map on the 20? I've been looking to buy it when I save up enough money and was just curious. Quote Link to comment

And only really show the major roads and large cities. Quote Link to comment
