+andrewcurrier
I am very confused on what gps I should buy for geocaching and I need help. I would want one that is very accurate so it isn't leading me some were I don't want to be. I would also want the screen to be easy to see, and water resistant. And I don't need any fancy features like a camera or a touch screen. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Your want list basically matches any current model Garmin handheld GPS.... Perhaps you should look at a few and narrow it down. Quote Link to comment
+Chrysalides
Accuracy of the unit depends on a few factors : has it been on long enough to get a solid fix on the satellites? Do you have a wide open view of the sky, or is your view partially blocked? How accurate are the original coordinates? sussamb listed the Garmin models that fit your requirements. GPSMap 62 is the basic model, now discontinued. GPSMap 62s is the model with barometer and electronic compass. The barometer can give you more accurate altitude, and the compass gives you compass direction when you're not moving. When you're moving, the GPS receiver can calculate the direction from your change in position. GPSMap 64 / 64s are similar to the 62 / 62s, except they're the current production model. They have more memory and can hold more geocaches for paperless caching, and adds GLONASS support. eTrex is Garmin's "value" line. They're smaller than the GPSMap. The 20 does not have barometer and electronic compass, the 30 does. They can hold up to 5000 geocaches. Don't dismiss touchscreen without trying one. It makes the unit more intuitive to use. Check out the Oregon 600 if you're interested. Good luck. Quote Link to comment
+coachstahly
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/gps-receiver.html The article provides some good information, but there are LOTS of places to look to find what you're after, this site included. The Garmin website allows you to compare all their units side by side. I'm sure there's also a site to compare manufacturer units side by side as well. Quote Link to comment
