Sad Day In Geocaching

Recommended Posts

I would like to say goodbye to my fellow coin addicts at this time. It has been fun collecting and trading with all of you. Every one I have made a trade with has made it a memorable experience for me.

I feel it is my best interest at this time to take a step back and let the smoke clear. I will be an active member of caching however I need to take a break from these forums as to avoid getting in any kind of trouble ( I really don't want to get banned).

Those who I have arranged trades with already for my new coin, we are still on. Any future coin trading will be done elsewhere, feel free to email me for additional information if you would like to trade.

Take care fellow addicts, hope to meet up with you at the next GAA meeting.

From the new guidelines.................

This forum may be used for selling, trading or giving away of geocoins which are trackable on Geocaching.com. This includes any trackable coin produced by an individual, business or geocaching organization. Non-trackable coins may be posted for trade by individual coin owners.

Why would you be leaving, Personal coin trading is allowed right?

I sympathize.

But let's all just step back and take a breath.

I sense that the cement of these new guidelines is still wet enough to be re-worked.

I know that's like asking a chain-smoker to stop smoking for a few days, but let's give it a try.

*Breath* *Breath* *Breath*

It's not working getting light headed just doing it .:lol:

This sad day has been coming for quite some time and I see many more sad days ahead with the poor decisions being made at the top. I have already started archiving all my caches. I will retrieve a few every week until they are all gone. I feel like tossing my 4 year collection of sig items in the round file. Congratulations Groundspeak.

I took Damenance's post to mean if you want to do trading with him meet him online at the place where his trading list is posted and he is a moderator...perhaps I should not post the website just in case?? but you know...the place that made his GAA coins?? I can't see him giving up coins for good...he's too addicted

ps FISHPOET ~ I must truly be in a tunnel here....what am I missing?? What major changes are happening in the geocaching world I don't know about??

Wow. I'm floored at the actions that some are taking.

Damenace, as noted you can still trade non-trackables here. If there are other issues, so be it.

As for calling the people here greedy? Geez. It's OK for a person to sell thier coin here for $8.00 - $10.00 to make a profit and everybody's ok with that but the guys that run this site and pay for bandwidth etc. feel they should get a slice of the pie to offset costs and that's a problem.

Goes to bang head on wall.....I just don't get the issue.

But not to hijack this thread. Damenace, I'm sure we'll be talking about the Grand Experiment elsewhere.

Stop and take a breath. Don't spite yourself.

Aren't you jumping the gun a bit. Give it some time to work out. Sheesh... It's not like it's the end of the world. As I see it, people who have been purchasing coins and/or trading know which sites to go to for these services. As long as GS is willing to continue providing tracking services and icons, I have no problems.

I'm wondering how many people who have sold stuff for a profit have reported such profit to the IRS and their State Dept of Taxation - this is one huge reason I've hesitated to venture into the selling part of Geocoins.

Sigh. :anitongue:

I am still completely in the dark as to why they would ban selling non-trackable coins. Makes no sense to me whatsoever. All they have done is alienate the people who spent a LOT of time and money on geocaching. Surely a significant amount of that money went to them.

Greedy seems like an apt word to me. Censoring posts? Bullies flexing their muscles.

I never liked bullies.

If someone sells 500 non-trackable coins, how much of that profit goes to Groundspeak for use of the forums to do so? Jeremy's quote here summed it up quite well:

If anything, this new anti-mooching policy should be welcomed. If people want to create a side business that is fine, but why you should expect to be able to use the Geocaching.com forums for free marketing of these coins is just plain silly. I'm not even sure why you believe you would be entitled to do so.

And what money would that be?

Money for Premium Membership? You get PQ's for that, don't you?

Money for tracking numbers? Yes they do and it seems to me that's what they are asking for here if you're to sell your coin here. They've never made money off non-trackable coins and have carried the expense of allowing everybody to sell here.

Censoring posts? To be expected if the guidelines aren't followed, right?

I suspect that you'd be ok with editing a post that contained foul langugage, right?

Can't pick and choose....

That is my thought as well. For selling non-trackable coins there are plenty of places to do so and advertise. I think most who are into collecting know where those are and will find the coins.

Geociding and archiving caches over the whole thing seems rather extreme to me. Geocaching isn't about coins. It is about geocaching. Geociding over a forum coin policy makes it appear to me that the heart was not really into caching in the first place then.
