Celestron Retrace Deluxe

My kids wanted to (and still do) get into geocaching so I decided to purchase the retrace deluxe, as opposed to using our cellphones location setting (and killing their juice . Just wanted to know if this is a good model or if I should sell it and move onto to something else. | don't want to spend too much. Thanks so much

Sadly it is not capable of doing what you would like. It records tracks and waypoints but you have to be there to record it as opposed to entering the data before hand manually of downloading it to the device. Once it has recorded the data you can return to a particular waypoint or backtrack the track you just recorded.

The name (Retrace) pretty much says it all... it is mostly for things like finding your car in a huge parking lot.

You need to have already marked the position in order to return (retrace) to it.

 

Not much good for other uses.

Yeah, weird thing is their product page says, "reTrace Deluxe takes your GPS functionality to the next level, featuring trail and data point collection and geocaching capability", though you have to already be there to mark the waypoint.

Now that you know this thing isn't so hot (unless you need to find your car), Any of the free Intro apps will get you started to see if the kids like it, before investing in a handheld GPSr.

I think the Garmin etrex 10 may be the cheapest, but you'd probably be better off with an etrex 20 in you find it fun.
