Garmin 62s Compass probs

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow caches, I got a problem that is really starting to annoy me. I have had my GPS for about a year, and now the compass will not calibrate nor function properly. The first step of the 3 works just fine, however I cannot get past the second. I've never had this problem before, and it's been doing this for about 2 months now. Taking advice from Garmin, I did a master reset, and updated the software. I've tried different batteries, done it inside and out, in the country and in the city. I've even removed the metal battery cover to see if it made any difference. I can still cache without it, but I want my money's worth and it does make caching easier. (By the way, I have two possible explanations for this problem: 1. I was working with some small neodymium magnets for a while, and they may at one time been close to it. 2. I ride with it on my road bike with no suspension, maybe vibration caused it?) Anyone have any ideas to fix it? I am a DIYer, so I am willing to try a wide variety of things. I really don't want to pay $110 to get it fixed, the feature isn't worth that.

Sorry to hear PC12. It sounds like an axis on your electronic compass may have either become magnetized or suffered vibration damage. Magnetization can be eliminated through a degaussing process but unfortunately it will erase the units flash memory as well. Vibration damage is mechanical and might be undone through further vibration or made worse. If I were you I would keep my eyes peeled for a cosmetically damaged unit on an auction site (cracked screen maybe) and attempt to swap out internals. That, of course, depends on your comfort level with that sort of thing. Not sure what else you can do.

Good luck
