Survey of Geocoins

I've sent out 12 geocoins (11 with holes drilled in them) and 5 are missing. Maybe that would upset some, but I am not daunted. Out of the 8 travel bug tags that I've sent out only 3 are still moving.

I am planning to send out more geocoins as soon as I get the tools and confidence to drill holes and attach heavy duty wire tags to them!

I have 87 travelers - 14 have come up missing so far, but I suspect that I have a few more missing, that I just haven't noticed.

I depend on. - and appreciate cachers letting me know if my geocoin is not in the cache. If a cacher contacts me - letting me know the status of my coin (i.e. I haven't been caching in a while, still have your coin) - I make sure I email them back - letting them know that "I know the coin is in good hands - and it's no hurry to get the coin moving again" - 9 times out of 10, the coin moves immediately.

I still have at least 30+ more coins I would like to release, but I am a bit distracted with a new class that I started – so I won’t be able to do as much geocaching (or forum) activities as I would like – until the end of the year.

Sometimes I imagine releasing my entire collection, with the exception of my special trades. I love the daily emails I get letting me know about my coins adventures and travels. I find myself seeking out the “online translators” – because my coins have found themselves traveling all around the world – and I receive logs in many languages. I look forward to receiving the logs – and will continue sending coins out to travel.

Life is good…

There are now still 34 traveling and 6 lost.

I think i lost a other one in england, but i most give this coin time to show up.

i also keep setting coins free into the world. it is my hobby and no thief will undo that.

Yeah several of mine that travel around have gone missing, but others that seem to move pretty regularly. Interestingly I've had a couple that were missing for a year or more show up again in the last couple of months, go figure! But people logging them said they found them in a different cache than what they showed in. I think maybe sometimes that people just forget to log a coin out of a cache and move it, or they don't realize they are supposed to do that if they pick it up. The rest probably horde them!

63 geocoins sent out into the wild.

Of these 9 have definitely gone MIA and a couple of others... well, I fear for their safety.

Of the 9 MIA - I believe 4 were deliberately stolen, 4 disappeared when caches were muggled and the other was taken by a newbie cacher who then stopped caching and never responded to my emails.

Not only am I the World's Worst Cacher, I am also the World's Worst Coin Owner. Here are my stats:

62 Activated coin owned.

- 23 have gone missing. (plus whatever I have not really checked on and marked missing)

- 8 lost in my own house . . . Ok I know where some of them are but have not yet put them in caches.

So I have about 1/2 that are still actively moving. That being said I have had a couple come back from the dead. Another one that got stuck in a very difficult multi for more than a year, but recently was rescued.

I once asked Marky how he kept from getting frustrated with coins going missing and his response was that he put out lots of coins, so he doesn't notice the missing ones. It was good advice. The other thing I do is leave a lot of unactivated coins. These can't be stolen

It also appears that most of the coins that have gone missing were the early ones I put out. My sense is that since coins have become more common they do not get stolen as often.

One Coin released and it went missing, released a TB in the same cache and it too went missing..........

A wee bit PO'd; but am willing to try this once more. I am putting together a new cache which will have seven coins in it. Hopefully they will fair better; I wish I would have purchased one of those "Bad Mojo" coins to protect the cache!!
