+T.D.M.22
Which is the best geo app for iPhone ,,,,,,,,and is a gps better than an iPhone for finding a cache I'm still a fan of the paid app, although I don't think you can get it anymore. I guess the free official app is OK. Is a GPS better? Well that's like asking if a Camaro is better than a Peterbilt. It depends on what you want. Some pros of the app are that you don't need to download anything. It connects right to the hamster wheels. Great for random caching adventures, with up date info. Pros of the GPS more rugged, better battery life. There are different apps, and different GPS units. It depends on what you want. Quote Link to comment
+geodarts
I use Geosphere - its hard for me to imagine caching without it. I love it's display, flexibility, and features that go beyond the Groundspeak app. Some feel the same way about looking4cache, cachly, or others. And for many, the Groundspeak app may be all that they need. Geosphere works well with my dedicated gpsr Oregon 600), but the only time I use the Oregon is if am kayaking. I stopped bringing it on long hikes. The phone has worked well in some tough conditions (narrow canyons, forests, etc.). But since the OP is just starting, my advice is to keep things simple. Use the Groundspeak app (or one of the free ones). Get used to the game. Get used to the phone, learn about both its strengths and limits through experience. If you find yourself wanting more - either in terms of a caching app or gpsr - then it might be time to look at alternatives. You will know when it's time. +noncentric
I don't use iPhone, so I can't comment on the specific apps. However, I did want to provide some links to some of the GPSr vs Smartphone threads. Most of these threads specifically refer to the iPhone: Iphone6 V GPS Benefit of GPS device vs iPhone? GPS vs iPhone Do I need GPS? GPS vs Phone App GPS Or Smartphone GPS device - can I use my iPhone6? Smartphone not good with too many clouds Can a Smartphone Replace a Dedicated GPS?
