Coining a new term...

I just watched the first Harry Potter movie about two weeks ago. If you think of it in the proper context, it's a movie about a 5+ star multicache ("In order to complete this cache, you must be a wizard. Be careful on stage 4, as you will encounter a giant three-headed dog. See Hagrid for the secret to solve this stage.")

Anyhoo, something's been bubbling in the back of my mind about that movie since, and a giant exclamation point just appeared over my head when I thought of this. It's a new Geocaching lingo term:

Muggle: mug' gl n: any person who has no knowledge of the sport of geocaching and who causes geocachers to become surreptitious about their activities in order to avoid a cache becoming exposed to non-geocachers. (The geocacher found what he knew must be the cache site, but waited until the muggles left so they would not see him and possibly plunder the cache)

In case you're one of the three of four people who haven't either seen the movie or read the books, a muggle is the term the wizard people use to describe someone who lives in the ordinary world and has no idea that wizardry and magic exists.

Kinda neat, I thought. Hope this term catches on so that I can go down in the annals of history in this sport, in case they open a Hall of Fame some day. (The Hall of Fame building will likely be located 150 feet off a well-maintained trail, but watch out for the mosquitos, ticks and poison ivy. It's located under an downed tree in an old ammo box.)

Muggles was mentioned http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=3000917383&m=4060992493 on February 25, 2002 09:10 PM for the first time.

Sorry Lyra, you don't get credit for coining a new word... but maybe you'll be a geocaching footnote for reviving the word. icon_biggrin.gif

Great thread! It preceded my GeoBaptism™ (all rights reserved icon_biggrin.gif) Added it to MyPop as a future reference and will likely add to it in the future.

Still, it's a great term and I agree, I should get some credit. Perhaps the Heisman Trophy or something.

As an aside and a "coming full circle thang" the person who proposed the use of that term was the one who placed a cache I referenced in a post earlier today here

It's a small world, huh?

Always wear proper caching safety equipment!

Duuuh, he was the Colonel on M*A*S*H after Mclean Stevenson left.

Actually the new term we coined comes from a lady who work in my office. When I came in a couple weeks ago, she said, "You can always tell when Bret's here, because all the men start acting like idiots . ..I mean kids."

I've tried using "muggle" to refer to noncachers before, but I think I like geomuggle better. Another one of those words to slip into conversations to make people wonder - kind of like "booty nuggets."

Its too early in the season to start talking about the Heisman Trophy though. (But if I had to pick, Rex Grossman deserves it. icon_biggrin.gif Just a little University of Florida bias on my part...)

Jeremy was using Geomuggle for his title line a while back. That is where I first saw it.

No, no, no, it was Harry Potter, and the part was played by Sherman Morgan. I'm almost certain of it.

Whoops . . my fault for not including the proper tags in my original posting. Here's how it should have looked:
