Pocket Queries [PQ's] and what's going...

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of concern expressed in the forum lately with regard to the speed and accuracy of the Pocket Query Generator, so I'd like to take a minute to explain some of the improvements made to the process that is currently being rolled out.

Our goal is to provide a link which will allow you to download your PQ directly from the website. While this feature is being developed, we're focused on improving the current implementation in other ways. Some of the upgrades so far include:

  • Upgraded application from .Net 1.1 to 3.5
  • Changed app from single threaded (1 at a time) to multi-threaded application
  • Went from an average of 18 PQs a min to 50+ PQs a min currently.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them. Thanks.

I haven't received my pocket queries from Friday 4/10/09 nor today's queries even though they were generated at about 1:16 am  .

A link that would allow direct downloads would be a big help... I think.

Thanks,

Paul aka "AZPAUL"

First off, THANK YOU for the post on this issue. Many cachers experience a problem of some sort and post here in the forums. Then they get frustrated (and worse) when there is no company response.

On a positive note, I've noticed that my scheduled queries for the last two days (Sat and Sun) were received MUCH earlier than usual. I got them at 8:00 am versus the normal 5:00 pm or later. That is probably due to item 3 where the PQ rate/min was improved.

However, if you made programming changes in the My Finds PQ area, there may (I repeat "may") be a problem. I requested my My Finds query by clicking on the "Add to queue" button. But I got an entirely different saved PQ, one that hadn't been run in some time and wasn't a scheduled PQ. Maybe it's a fluke so I'll just wait a week and try again. But......

Thanks for the update. Direct download sound pretty sweet, though I do wonder about the problems that may arrive using other than a personal at home computer. Now if I can figure out the problems the newest VZManager caused to my Vista laptop I will back to geocaching. (which takes me back to using a work or public computer)

This all sounds like a nice improvement, but the fact remains that pocket queries are being generated, but not delivered. That is of more interest to me. One little 100 cache pocket query requested this morning, still not delivered.

Not sure when you did the upgrade, however some point during last week I noticed my PQ's arriving much earlier. I used to have to wait until sometime after 0930 central for my scheduled PQ's to arrive. Now they seem to be arriving before 0700 central.

Thanks for the updates.

I just got the regenerated ones.

They went to my primary email address instead of the alternate gmail account they should go to.

And now they show a generation time of 1:00 p.m. which means next week they won't come in until late afternoon if I don't delete the queries and make new copies.

Is there a timeline as to when we can expect the instant download capability?

I had one PQ run around 3:30 AM PT, and two more run about three hours later. I haven't received any of them yet, so I'd have to say that the queue has not been cleared.

Something a little bizarre is that on my PQ page, it now indicates that all three of these PQs were generated at exactly 2 AM PT.

For the PQ's that show to have run 13 hours ago yet were not received, would it be possible to resend them in case they were eaten by the PQ server?

Last friday it claimed to send two PQs however only one was received and today it claims four were sent before 1am yet none have been obtained by the mail client yet.

Yes.. I checked junk mail and filters

They simply never arrived.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it doesn't say 2 PM.

2 of my PQs that originally ran early this morning but were never delivered now show as running at 3 PM and they arrived shortly after that.

I think the PQs were lost and Groundspeak is rerunning them.

Yeah, I'm in the same 2AM limbo on one PQ. I hope "between" means "less than or equal to" on the high end.

But I guess that would still put us at the end of the queue.

I created a new PQ and received it immediately. My 2AM has not rerun.

Is there any chance on getting more that 500 caches in a query? 1000 would be nice, but more is always better

I've heard that there will soon be a cap and trade program for PQ's. If you don't use your allotment of PQ's in a given day you will be able to sell the unused ones to the highest bidder. I generally have 3-4 a day available.

There was an issue with a new regex script that was parsing emails. It was corrected a short time ago. Let me know if you still see this happening.

I want to draw attention to this post by Raine again. Because emails were not parsing correctly, in many cases the PQs were sent to the primary address associated with your account, and not the alternative address you may have entered when creating the PQ. If you commonly request PQs to an address other than your primary email account this may affect you.

I had 4 that were run this morning at 12:59:00, they have still not arrived, even with the reset. They have not been received at ANY of my email addresses. Any chance of trying again?

Thanks,

Some new info...

The PQs I ran Sunday show a date of 4/12/2009, around 8:39...PM, and are BOLD in the PQ listing. They were delivered.

The ones I had scheduled for today show a generation date of 4/12/2009 at 12:59:00AM, and are NOT bold, nor were they delivered. The date is the 12'th, not the 13'th as expected. This might be the problem. The time incremented, the date didn't. If the system is showing more than 5 on the 12'th, it isn't sending them?

I'm confused. The last time a PQ ran for you was around 8pm last night, and you have not scheduled any PQs to run today or any other day this week.

Edit: Ok thanks for the explanation. Go ahead and check the boxes for Monday on those four PQs and they should show up pretty quickly.

This says it ran 4/13/2009 2:00:00 AM

And it's not in either email address. <shrug>

Glad to hear that there are upgrades coming. Also sorry that someone didn't address two weekend's ago issues as they were happening

Still a little buggy. A PQ from this AM about 9-ish ran fine but the My Finds query ran at 4/13/2009 4:18:11 PM but still nothing at 5:31 PM

Raine,

All my PQ's were waiting in my inbox this AM, usually they come throughout the day. Looks like you hard work has really improved things, THANKS!!

And, yes, I know I've violated some unspoken rule by actually saying something nice!

And the currency for this C+T program would be???

Back to the OP. Thanks for the upgrades! Look forward to using the on-screen download method.

Can you give us a time estimate as to when we might see the "download directly" feature?

We are having two problems with our PQs.

First, the one that's being discussed here, where the PQ runs but the emails do not arrive in a timely manner. Like others have stated, that problem seems to be getting better.

Second, our route PQs will not kickoff. We had them enabled all day yesterday and they did not fire. Have them checked again today, but nothing so far. We have not exceeded our daily limit.

Any suggestions for our second problem?

Do your route pq's show as being generated yet?

I managed to get a pre-existing route pq to generate by clicking the box for Tuesday, but my new route pq has yet to fire off. I've tried archiving it and recreating it- no dice. I've also tried clicking the box off and on (and leaving it alone for an hour) and nothing. I've only hit three of my limit for the day.

I will check on this as soon as I get in the office.

-Raine

Please check on mine too. I am having the exact same problem. I set up 3 route PQ's yesterday and one standard and checked them all off to fire on Monday. The Standard PQ fired within 10 minutes but the route PQ's never did. I've checked off the Monday request and re-checked them for Tuesday but still haven't seen anything yet.

Thanks in advance for all you do.

We tried similar things including shortening the name and removing the .kml extesion from the name. No luck so far. Our non-route PQs are working fine today.

I tried to run the pocket query for my finds yesterday morning. I thought I clicked the button, but noticed after being on the page for 30 seconds or so that the date didn't get updated, so I clicked it again. The date changed, and I happily waited for the results, which didn't arrive.

Later in the day, I grumbled to a friend, who mentioned that this happened to him when he clicked the button twice accidently.

I've had to click the button twice for months now. Unless I hit it the second time the thing never generates. Hit the button once- pages refreshes with no changes. Hit it again- pages refreshes and now the button is greyed out.

I tried creating a copy of the non-generating route pq and no luck there either.
