+MysteryGuy1
I went after a cache this past weekend that had just been published a week earlier. It was hidden inside a hollow tree. Well, some of it was anyway. What I found were 4 small, rubber toys, a typewritten piece of paper explaining what Geocaching is, and a small log signed by another cacher who'd been there earlier in the day. But no container, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the original log. So...would you count this as a find? I did, but felt a bit unsettled about it. I also flagged it for maintenance. +bflentje
In my book it is a find. Although the idea of being unsettled by it kind of unsettles me.. Quote Link to comment
+Cachez
I've found a couple like this where the ammo box has been stolen and the contents left behind. I've logged a find and an NM. Quote Link to comment
+Manville Possum
I've found a couple like this where the ammo box has been stolen and the contents left behind. I've logged a find and an NM. Same here just a few months ago. The log book was still present and I signed it. Edited June 19, 2017 by Manville Possum Quote Link to comment
+Zoidrums
Boxes tend to disappear (thanks Muggles). If you have one with you when you find the log without box, you can place it and log a "need maintenance" in the same time of your "found it". So the CO will pass to check if his box still there or not Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
So...would you count this as a find? I did, but felt a bit unsettled about it. I also flagged it for maintenance. Yep. And the responsible CO replaced with another container the same day of your accurate NM. Good for them. Quote Link to comment

I'm impressed because the CO seems to be pretty inexperienced, whereas many long-time cachers seem to ignore the NM logs. And the reason I said I felt unsettled was, I know people have different opinions about when to log or not log a cache. I wasn't sure if missing container equals missing cache. Quote Link to comment

I wasn't sure if missing container equals missing cache. On a similar note - how long should cachers keep logging finds after the container is missing? Container has been missing for a while - swag on the ground - I NMd it a month or so ago - getting finds logged for months now with just finding swag at GZ.. Quote Link to comment

If the owner hasn't responded to the NM log in a month, post an NA. Quote Link to comment
+paleolith
The standard answer is "sign log, get smilie". Edward Quote Link to comment

If logs indicated the situation had been made clear by several previous finders, especially with NM, and there was no CO action (or the CO was inactive) I would CITO the cache contents (which are probably ruined by rain and humidity anyway) and log NM. Ha, I had an ammocan hidden in a cave. The maggot stole the ammocan but was kind of enough to put the contents into a leaky coffee can for me before they left.
