Container Was Gone, Contents Still There

Recommended Posts

I went after a cache this past weekend that had just been published a week earlier. It was hidden inside a hollow tree. Well, some of it was anyway. What I found were 4 small, rubber toys, a typewritten piece of paper explaining what Geocaching is, and a small log signed by another cacher who'd been there earlier in the day. But no container, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the original log.

So...would you count this as a find? I did, but felt a bit unsettled about it. I also flagged it for maintenance.

Yep.

And the responsible CO replaced with another container the same day of your accurate NM.

Good for them. :)

Wow, you're way ahead of me. I hadn't even noticed that it was replaced. I'm impressed because the CO seems to be pretty inexperienced, whereas many long-time cachers seem to ignore the NM logs.

And the reason I said I felt unsettled was, I know people have different opinions about when to log or not log a cache. I wasn't sure if missing container equals missing cache.

On a similar note - how long should cachers keep logging finds after the container is missing?

Container has been missing for a while - swag on the ground - I NMd it a month or so ago - getting finds logged for months now with just finding swag at GZ..

If the owner hasn't responded to the NM log in a month, post an NA.

If logs indicated the situation had been made clear by several previous finders, especially with NM, and there was no CO action (or the CO was inactive) I would CITO the cache contents (which are probably ruined by rain and humidity anyway) and log NM.

I've found a couple like this where the ammo box has been stolen and the contents left behind. I've logged a find and an NM.

Ha, I had an ammocan hidden in a cave. The maggot stole the ammocan but was kind of enough to put the contents into a leaky coffee can for me before they left. [serious head shake]
