'Suspicious device' in Colonial Heights was a geocache

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) -

Colonial Heights Fire officials confirmed the "suspicious device" found at the Colonial Heights Library was a geocache, a container in which people try to find using a GPS device.

The call came in around 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday after someone from the RVA Rocks Facebook group discovered it. Crews used a robot to move the device out into the parking lot.

The Virginia State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal team spent time taking a look at the device. The investigation wrapped up around 10 p.m., and the scene is now clear.

Per the cache page, placed by permission, which is a plus. On the down side, though, unlabeled PVC container, which is a way to do it, but not the recommended technique.

Yeah...

Don't know what goes through someone's head to make a cache look to be an explosive device.

To boot, hide these in towns just makes no sense (to me).

Guess someone thought that area a good place for one of their painted rocks.

- Odd (to me) that some think a rock painted is so much better than it's natural state...

I think it is very important to label this type geocache container with an official geocaching sticker and not hide them in urban settings.

I can see where this cache could cause concern, as I was once holding one very similar in a mall parking lot when security rolled up. He was aware of a geocache there.

As for that type container, I have a few similar ones in the field. Those little dog bone PVC caches with a loose cap on the end leak.

So nice concept in cache containers, just be sure to mark em' and careful where you hide em'. :D
