hertsmas
Lo all from Sunny Hertfordshire. I have just discovered Geo Caching and have two young sons who are keen to have a go too. I have read up on the basics and to be honest am very keen to set up my own cache as I live in a village with lovely country trails/walks and its ideal. I realise I should find a few first though but it is defo my intention to set one up as I think looking after it and having positive feedback will be much of our fun. Back to the question, I found a cache near my work in London , in a tiny park. I found it on my phone with the ap with the colon in it I get the basic idea but if I turn the compass on the app it doesnt even seem to point in the direction of the park ! , maybe i ned to be carful what way up I hold the phone im not too sure whart gives here. will I be able to find the cache without the compass ? , do most of you just use a closer or further away in metres principal. I have no real experience of using GPS other than in car as a sat nav ( on my phone) which has always worked rather well and would like to pinpoint the little one in ther park on my way home later today. +ADKer
(This answer is not specific toward any app. Moderators, please don't delete it. It isn't directions on how to use that app specifically. Thanks) Anyway, Welcome to the hobby! It may be your phone. Not all of them have a real compass, not even all dedicated GPS units. For example, on my eTrex 20 I have to be moving for the "compass" to works correctly. That's how it tells which direction is which, it just assumes that I'm holding the device forward as I'm moving. Hope that makes sense! As for the different methods of getting to the cache, I nearly always use the arrow when I'm within 500 feet. I've tried the "closer or further away principal" but it tends to take longer. I do have a friend that just looks at the map and tries to get to GZ (ground zero) that way. If you have any more questions, just ask! (Oh and it's great that you want to set up your own cache! However, I recommend finding a fair amount (the website recommend 20) of geocaches before, just so you can get a feel for things.) Edited August 7, 2014 by ADKer Link to comment

+Chief301
Odd, the cache you found isn't listed on your profile and you know not to mention the "app with the colon in it" already too. Isn't that something. I took that to mean that the OP had discovered that there is a cache in a park near to his/her office, not that they had actually gone out and found the cache yet. As far as the reference to the "app with the colon in it", a little browsing of the forums or a search for "best app for geocaching" would quickly reveal some of the discussions around that app. OP, are you still in your office inside the building when your compass is pointing the wrong direction? Might work better if you step outside with a clear view of the sky. Link to comment

Maybe they did what they were suppose to and searched the forums first. Nearly every topic makes it clear that it is not to be named, and I've often called it the "app with the colon in it" in these forums. Link to comment

Yes you're correct. Surprised that anyone can now participate on a c:geo-themed thread. Link to comment
