Hello all,

A few years back I met a gal that was a Cacher. The other day I got an email from Geocache.com and it sparked an interest again. I looke on the map, and low and behold, there was a cache just down the street. Which I went to find(at 3 or so in the morning)right then. No GPS needed. Now back in the day I used a Garmin???? More of a road unit I'd say. 5"w or so and was kinda triangled with a fold over antenna. Garmin??V I think. It worked, but with all this talk of paperless? And new technology??? I'm thinking a change is in order. I looked into some threads about GPS units and what I find is OUTDATED. I've liked my Garmin interface and would most likely want to stay here, unless there is something SO MUCH BETTER!!!! Hopefully you all can help. Don't want to waste time or money on an inferior product. Not that there is NO budget, but spending money right ONCE has always been my philosophy.

Let me know, THANKS

I'm not sure where you are seeing this "outdated" information.

Right here in the Getting Started forum, on just the first page, are these threads about "what gps to buy":

Garmin GPS V. I loved mine. It's hard to go wrong with a Garmin.

My advice is to head over to their website and take a gander at the different units that they offer and use their comparison tool to check out the differences. For my meager money, the eTrex Venture has always been the sweet spot in GPSrs. The current version, the eTrex 20 is what I would buy if I were in the market today.

Pretty much any of the current crop of Garmin handhelds will do paperless Geocaching. Depending on your budget you can get a good unit for anywhere from $200-$700 or so. The lower end of that range are perfectly capable units for Geocaching, beyond that it's just a matter of how many bells and whistles you want to pay for.

Some things to consider:

Paperless Geocaching (obviously)

Type of interface / controls...touch screen, joystick, or buttons? Garmin offers all three, comes down to personal preference.

SD card slot for extra memory (important if you want to install....

....Maps. You'll probably want a unit that has topographical maps installed (units with a "T" in the model name for Garmins), or at least has the capability to accept maps (SD card slot).

Both the Oregon 450 and the 62s are older units that are being phased out, so they are available for $200 or less. Both great units for Geocaching. The newer Etrex 20 or 30 are also in this price range and should also serve well. If you want to pay a little more for more features, bigger and better screen, etc., you can look at one off the midrange or higher end units.

I see that the OP has found caches in the Tualatin, OR area. If that's close, and you can wait just a bit more, Cabela's is opening a new store very near you this fall. I think the next closest would be Springfield. Cabela's often has sales on GPSers, and right now has the 62st at $249. I normally wouldn't advise getting an "st" unit, as there are plenty of free topo maps available...but if one were in the market for a new GPSer...it's a pretty good price. Cabela's also used to have the 62s on sale for $199 frequently, but I haven't seen those for a while, maybe they're sold out or something.
