+Paper__Moon
Hi, I am looking to buy my first GPS unit. I really don't have a lot of money or a smartphone. I was looking at either the Magellan Explorist GC or the Garmin eTrex H. Does anyone have any comments on either of these? Please help! I am literally dreaming about finding my First cache and can't wait to get my hands on a GPS! Thanks, Rachel Quote Link to comment
+Chief301
I don't think Garmin makes the Etrex H anymore. Do you have a smartphone? There are several Geocaching apps available to get you started. Quote Link to comment
+Graculus
Of those two, the Magellan is the better one. It has loads more features and the basemap it comes with is pretty good (the eTrex H has no maps). Plus you can easily connect the GC to a computer to transfer information. The GC also does 'paperless caching' which means you can see all the cache information on it. It's a nice little GPS. If you look on my resource website (link under my signature) you'll find a review I wrote of the GC specifically for geocaching. Andronicus
If you are looking for older GPSr, you should be able to find an older used, but new in box eTrex for cheep ($30) from your local used goods website. I bought 3 garmins this way (Legend H, and 2x Vista HC). The key with those older Garmin GPSr is it HAS TO have an H in the model number. Don't buy it if it doesn't. That is the high sencitivity receiver. You will tend to loose accuracy or even satallite lock under heavy tree cover eitherwise. Edit to add: USB connection is much nicer than Serial! Oh-and it comes with a free 30 premium membership to geocaching.com - so that's great too! Thanks for your help and info. Rachel Edited August 13, 2014 by TeamTrevino Quote Link to comment
