Garmin Extrex 20

Would a Garmin Extrex 20 be a good decision for a gps to buy? Also, would it be as simple to load Pocket queries onto it as the extrex 10? Thanks

Ok i have a new question. With this gps, it has an expandable memory via microSD card. Does it matter how much memory is on the card? Or can it only take so much? For example; If i bought a 32gb microSD card and filled it with pocket queries, would it not be able to process all 32gb?

It can process the entire 32GB but not with pocket queries. The unit can only hold 5000 caches and you would reach that limit long before you filled 32GB. The extra storage could be used to hold free maps. In any case you will be wise to get a card and use it to hold your GPX files. Garmins have a habit of freezing up or not displaying any caches every now and then. These can easily resolved by removing the card, restarting then reinserting the card.

How will the etrex access the microsd card? Because i now have both the garmin and the card, and i put a pocket query on the card and it didnt show up. Is there some kind of setting i need to change...?

Did you unzip the downloaded [PQ] file? The unit cannot read a zipped file.

There will be two files after unzipped... xxxxxx.gpx AND xxxxx-wpts.gpx.

TIP: You must put geocache files in

the Garmin\GPX folder.

Yes i unzipped it. So when i turn on the map or list of geocaches, it only lists the ones saved on the garmin (not the card) for my area. Would i have to go to the area that the other pocket queries cover in order for it to show them on the device? Or is it supposed to show all geocaches, on the system and the card, at the same time?

How far away is that area?

In excess of fifty miles, many units will not show those caches until you are closer.

Some higher-end Garmin units will show caches on-screen at long distances... most do not.

Whether they show in-unit and from on-card at the same time, I do not know -- with a Garmin.

On our Delorme, they do not, but we can switch back and forth at will.

As has been stated many times in the past this is not true on the eTrex 20, the unit being discussed.

And yes, the e20 will read and combine caches from both memory and the SD card.

Differing responses to this. Would the eTrex 30 be that much different than the 20? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=328747&view=findpost&p=5459494

As gitchee gummee says both files from the unzipped pq must be placed in the folder named garmin/gpx on the sd card. If the folder does not exist you must create it.

Oh I didnt understand this before. So, just to verify, on the micro sd card, I put a folder called "garmin" and put the files in it? Only one folder, with both files from the unzipped pq?

Hi GG, sorry for the delayed reply, the 1st was busy! Go Ducks.

I would expect the 30 to be the same as the 20 but I only speak about GPS units that I have first hand knowledge about. I don't know the circumstances that caused John to make the statement he did about his 30 so I can't comment it. I can say that with my 20, I have tested how distant caches are handled several times and in different conditions. One test was to load remote caches (500 miles away) with about 2000 caches nearby (<20 miles)caches. Another test was to load caches that were 1200 miles away onto an empty GPS. In all my tests the distant caches appeared on the unit with no problem when either scrolling through the list (not a fun task with the 2000) or using the search function.
