Garmin 64st Won't Stop Recording!

Hello,

I can't seem to get my Garmin 64st to stop recording, even when it's off.

I went to Setup > Tracks > Track Log, and set it to 'Do Not Record.'

Nevertheless, i'm still having the following two issues:

1) When i look at my trip computer, it shows information being updated in real time as if i were recording.

2) When i go to Track Manager > Current Track, it does say, "There is no current track. Would you like to turn tracking on?" If i say, "Yes," then it changes the Track Log setting to 'Record, Do Not Show,' and leaves it there. Furthermore, it does not reset the trip computer.

Has anyone noticed that? How do you handle it?

I would like for my Garmin to only record my trip when i tell it so. I also have a Garmin Edge Touring, and it's really nice what they did there. You have a play button you press whenever you want it to start recording, and then again when you want it to stop. It doesn't seem like the 64st has anything like that. Am i totally confused?

Thanks a lot in advance!

The Tripdata function is always on. That's not the same as Track recording, which can be turned on and off as you desire. To get what you want, when you get to a point where you want to start monitoring as the start of an activity, just select the option to clear the trip data. Everything goes to 0 and starts over. Track recording has a few settings you might want to fiddle with, one of which is to ask when it will start a new track automatically. I prefer the "Daily" option, and I leave track recording on all the time. What that will do, however, is to treat your entire day as one long track, even if you start and stop recording a couple times a day or even turn your 64 off for a while and turn it on hours (and miles away) later. You can always save each track segment separately if you wanted multiple activities saved in the same day. So you need to look at those options to see which one will fit your needs the best. And if you forget to split things up, you can always load the track into Basecamp and split it into multiple separate tracks if you want.

When I get to an activity I know I will want to save, I'll select Current Track and Clear. It will prompt me if I want to clear the trip data, too. I select yes, and they are both zeroed out to the beginning of my hike, for example. After the hike, I select Current Track and Save. That saves just the activity that I want.

Does the 64 have the option to sync track data with the trip computer like the Oregon 600 does?

For reference, track recording doesn't drain your battery any more quickly whether it's on or off. The biggest drain on your battery is the screen. The 64, and all handheld GPS for that matter, have reflective screens that are sunlight readable and these days even shade readable. To conserve battery life, 1. turn the backlight off. You don't really need it when you're outside during the day. 2. Turn battery save mode on. This turns the screen off after a specified amount of idle time - 30 seconds is ideal. If the screen is on constantly, it's drawing power, and it draws more power redrawing the map every second. 3. use a different kind of battery. Regular alkalines get the shortest life in a GPS. Rechargeable NiMH batteries are better, and non-rechargeable Lithium batteries are the best, though they are also the most expensive. If you're not using rechargeable batteries, grab a set of Eneloops (either the white 2000mAh or the black 2500mAh) and you'll probably notice better times out of a single pair.
