+georgia_pedestrian
I'm in the market for a geocaching-friendly GPS receiver and have noted that some receivers are pre-loaded with 250,000 geocaches. My question is: which 250,000 of the nearly 3,000,000 geocaches are pre-loaded? A sampling from around the world? All in North America? Just the USA? The 250,000 caches nearest my home address? Would like to hear from someone who has purchased such a pre-loaded GPSr as to where those geocaches are located. Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
Why would it matter? By the time you purchase it, a good percentage will have issues, or be archived already anyway. Quote Link to comment
+Mineral2
Yeah, don't let the pre-loaded caches sway your decision. ALL modern and semi-modern GPS units are geocaching friendly (basically anything that is on the market today, or the last generation (or two for some lines) second hand). So you basically need to decide which features above the basic GPS design are important to you: Screen size Interface (buttons, joystick, or touch screen) electronic compass and barometric altimeter Quote Link to comment
+georgia_pedestrian
OK. I'll move on to more important features. Was just curious. Quote Link to comment
ohgood
OK. I'll move on to more important features. Was just curious. that "Comes with 250,000 caches!" is just marketing, kind of like how "has Bluetooth!" listed in the features isn't the Bluetooth capability you've grown savoriness to with tablets/phones/computers. those 250,000 caches might have 10% archived (who knows) 30% micros (pointless), and maybe only 3% that are actually up to date (yay!) and favorited by cachers (wahoo!). it's a much better idea to look up (cull the uninteresting) caches that have a lot of favorites comments at interesting landmarks and terrain features. just a heads up, there is a LOT of marketspeak in advertising.
