automap shortest route along many caches

I'm looking to plan a caching trip and wonder if an online mapping solution exists that creates the best route from a given starting point to a bigger number of cache coordinates.

if you just drive from A to B and back to A again it's easy to plan a route, but if you wanted to visit a large number of ECs around your area then it's more difficult to find the optimal route. I've found something that accepts addresses, but caches rarely have an address, plus you have to find the nearest address to start with as well.

Please give the name and link of what you stil found. It's not fun to suggest workflows that are still discarded. blink.gif

There are a couple of websites that seem to do something like this with addresses (just google "shortest route finder"), but those don't help me.

I know about some sites and I know how to google. rolleyes.gif That doesn't let me know what you are discarded. ph34r.gif

Look Hans, I briefly looked at a couple of websites, entered various coordinate formats and found that none of them understood them. Thus I closed them again.

Is it really that diffcult to name those sites? Even the GCcode of some of those caches that you'd have issues with are welcome.

And please give a clue on what you mean by "many" caches. 10, 20, 50 or more?

yes, I cannot name those websites because my browser crashed and lost the browsing data from before that. I'm looking at around 20-30 earthcaches around Edinburgh.

Oh wow! What kind of macro is that? I just installed GSAK yesterday to have a better overview over EarthCaches in general, and EC challenges that require counties and classifications per country and other odd things. Thus I'm still a beginner, but maybe I can get this to work. Cool! But this is indeed more or less the bath of ECs I was thinking off. Need to play a bit more to see if it makes sense to add certain ones or omit them for a later time.

Again Hans, this is fantastic! A quick success story with GSAK is all I needed :) Thanks a lot.

You're welcome. Glad that it fit your needs.

Yes, it does! Gives me a good idea what happens if I remove a few caches here and there. By just removing 4 from my database the route would go from 200 to 150km. Not bad. The route needs some more optimising as there are a few odd things in there, but it's brilliant. And I have an actual project for GSAK instead of just dumping data into it

If you are generally interested in creating routes or preparing an itinerary

then this macro Create Multi-Step Route

might be of interest for you. ;-)

Thanks a lot. I'll have a look at it tonight.

I just came back from a long trip last weekend and was a bit annoyed that there was no clear way of knowing how long it would take to do detours for about 14 Earthcaches near that route. The original 5hrs drive had turned into 10 hours in the end
