Garmin's Oregon 650 Internal memory

Recommended Posts

As the desc says, I want to copy/move some files from the O650's internal mem, so i can move the topo map there. Not just so the sdcard is free for pics or whatever, but because panning from the memory card is sticky and slow.

I don't know the file structure at all, but i know Garmin pre-installed a bunch of s*** I have no use for, ?. Demo Birdseye, demo this and that. I need to clear space because the unit arrives from the store with only 600mb free, and I need 2.xGb for the Aus/NZ Topo maps.

You sure you have a 650? The Oregon 6xx Wiki shows almost 2.8 Gigs free. Look HERE and HERE.

Yeah, it was my mistake: I checked the space available whilst the file was copying, and Windows7 was reporting the drive with the entire 2.xGb already deducted from the drive/GPSr. Earlier versions of windows would update te numbers *as* q file was being copied, and if you refresh, you'd see it shrink bit-by-bit as the file got moved.

So it's a "feature" Win7 employs that I'd not seen on previous versions.

Anyway, turns out there was over 3gb. 3.4gb or something, and *after* copiying the topo img file there's 650-ish-gb free.

I use some pretty large topo files on the sdcard for my Montana and don't have any problem with it lagging.

The 650 sortta mocr-pauses when you pan the map. Doesn't seem to matter the zoom level, detail setting or anyhing, it has a quarter-second redraw-lag when you flick the map around, yeah. It even does it with the basemap, though i have that disabled. Have all the maps diaabled except the topo Aus/nz map.

Maybe firmware can sort it oit,. Maybe I should go complain to Garmin about it, since the more complaints the more lokely they are to prioritize it.

It doesn't do it when you're walkong or moving and the map is auto-panning, only when you try to flock the map around with your finger, and it's still a gorgeous device.
