+Graculus
The Commonwealth Games will be on in Glasgow and the surrounding area from 23rd July to 3rd August. During this time we ask that if you are searching for a cache in an area where public events such as cycling or road races are taking place to be aware of the increased security presence and ensure your actions do not cause a response from security staff, the police or concerned members of the public. You may check the location of venues on the Games website here https://www.glasgow2014.com/games/venues Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website Quote Link to comment
BOBBLES WORLD TOUR
Oh how you have mellowed since 2012. Can I ask why you have dealt with Glasgow caches so differently than you did with London? Both cities have had serious security threats over the years. It doesn't matter what this reviewer said in 2012; he is warning about NOW, not then, probably also in light of the fact that the UK Mega will be just down the road at the same time. Thank you Graculus for the warning. Quote Link to comment
+GilkerscleughCachers
Was the Mega planned to clash with the Commonwealth Games? Sitting watching the opening ceremony. Let the games begin! Quote Link to comment
+Graculus
The Olympics was the first very large international sporting event to take place in the UK for some years - certainly since geocaching came into being. The Olympics was not just in London, there were venues all over the UK. It was decided that with so many venues taking the action we did was the best thing to do - disabling caches and not allowing new caches to be placed for the duration of the games. This was done after considerable discussion with Groundspeak and the UK reviewing team. The Commonwealth Games is not such an international event as the Olympics and the events and venues are mainly located around Glasgow with just two outside (Edinburgh and Carnoustie) So after discussion it was felt there was no need to disable caches or stop caches being placed close to venues. +Happy Humphrey
The Tour de France in Yorkshire attracted a much bigger attendance than the Commonwealth Games and is a much more prominent event, but AFAIK there were no restrictions for cachers nor any problems reported. Perhaps this indicated that there wasn't too much to worry about for the Games either. Edited July 24, 2014 by Happy Humphrey Quote Link to comment
