newbie on a new samsung 6 needs help

This so called new app with issues. It is giving me false coordinates when hunting for a cache ie : the refresh rate is bad and results are slow ( but after spending hours reading the android new app bugs and complaints, I am disappointed with my purchase of premium. This app is not so user friendly. I assume when hiding a cache and you want to find its coordinates that the app has the ability to do that. Could someone explain that to me please. Secondly using just the geocaching app can everything be done that needs to be done or are other apps needed ?

The official geocaching application is basically a teaser of what is possible. If you search the form you'll find a lot of threads with suggestions to improve it.

 

It's a lot easier to use one of the other applications that hadn't been purposely limited in is functionality.

 

The GPS in your device will function fine, with the right app.

While navigating to any cache, go to the compass screen. The coordinates of your location are shown in the lower left-hand corner. You can save coords as waypoints within the App.

 

The App is designed so that people can load it and go find a Geocache. Hiding a cache is a whole other ballgame, and involves some research on the web site.

A web browser for sure. There isn't a Groundspeak Forum App. And when hiding a cache, it's much better using a full-featured PC web browser, when filling out the cache hide form. And, many cache pages are designed for PC web browsers, especially puzzle caches. Except for situations like that, you could use Chrome on a phone for all the cache info and Geocaching.com site features, and open a compass App (such as GPS Status, also a cool App for scouting cache lotations) when ready to hunt a cache.

 

As mentioned, there are fancier Apps, and most are free to try. Do an App Store search for "Geocaching" and try them.

The smartphone is a samsung 6 , which is last years top seller.

The app is geocaching.com app.

With so many people geocaching with smartphones I wonder is there is a review of top five geo caching apps ?

Thanks so much for your time to respond I will look as you indicated , I just assumed I had to use goocaching.com to see premium caches and to collect souvenirs of accomplishment. So use a better app to get the right coordinates and enter them in GC.com app and use another app to find caches as the Geocache.com app does lead me away from the cache and changes all the time from 3 meters to 1.2 km very confusing but bearing with it we are doing not to bad with 23 out of 26 finds using gc.com app just waiting between steps for a refresh. Thanks so much I thought it was something I was doing wrong , self doubt. But after reading thru the forum I have seen the complaints and now I will search out other apps.

The GPS circuitry is making millions of calculations per second, and presenting averages of the data. One plan is to continue to find caches (especially, visit easily accessed caches you found already, or waypoints you have set and saved), and get a feel for what the GPS receiver is doing and what it's telling you. People recommend "averaging Apps", but I can manage by looking at the GPSr. "3 meters... 3 meters... 3 meters... 1.2 km". The odd one out is obvious to me. In fact, if it's producing really crazy readings, it may not be an "App" issue at all. If that model of phone has some problems, it might involve more research online. Often, there are other things to do, such as start a GPS App let it settle down before starting follow its directions. Sometimes, you'll read that Bluetooth must be on... or off... or there are other settings that make "Location" more responsive in any given model of phone.

Thank you for your response , This specific phone is a $900 samsung 6 phone and loaded to the teeth with fast processors and top of the line apps and memory etc. My concerns were those left by others while researching problems of the geocaching software and the opinions ( negative) expressed I too had problems. After one month I am still not sure how to place a cache and use this geocaching.com app to find the coordinates for me to publish can you take a moment to explain that to my wife and I . We want to contribute to the caching community not just find others hard work and efforts !! I have placed two and cant get coordinates from app procedure.

The GPS Averaging app will help you get a good, stable set of coordinates for your hide.

 

I use it, and it works well as a standalone app. Some caching apps (well, Locus for sure) will call it up as needed and save you from having to copy-and-paste the coords between apps.

Are you referring to the Samsung Galaxy s6 phone? Just saying 'samsung 6' isn't entirely clear which phone you're using. For example, if you said 'samsung 4', then we couldn't be sure if you meant the Note 4 or the Galaxy s4.

 

After one month I am still not sure how to place a cache and use this geocaching.com app

The geocaching.com app is more useful for 'finding' caches, not necessarily to 'place' caches. There are a lot of guidelines and rules for placing caches, so the website is the better place to review those materials. Some items of reference include: Help Center Knowledge Books and Listing Guidelines

 

To get the coordinates for your hides, using a phone, then you'll want to use a GPS Averaging app (as VP noted above). It's often recommended to determine the coords on different days/times.

 

Once you have all the information and materials prepared/placed, then this page is where you'll create your cache listing.

PS, that app's estimated accuracy seems ...suspiciously optimistic. I would let it sit and take a looooong average even it's already claiming zero-meter accuracy. Just to be safe.

 

I've hidden some caches with this app, and heard no complaints yet.

Boy, those surveyors who spend thousands of dollars on their high-end GPS systems must be chumps, if a smartphone can really get zero-meter accuracy...

i have noticed they always have their iPhones out. maybe the rig is to make them look like billing $$$$$ when they're really working $$ ?
