Hi All, Hopping for some help. Premium membership is $29.99 when logged in on my laptop. Logged in on my iphone6 app they want $39.99 Anyone know why this is?

My iphone6 works great as a basic member , not even sure why i want to upgrade. Im upgrading to help support Geocaching and get a couple more features , but i want my app to work properly,i downloaded the free app, not the paid intro app, apparently the paid intro app is the old app?? I downloaded the new official geocaching app. to upgrade from that app is the $39.99 Could that be because im buying it from the apple app store? and from my laptop i buy direct from HQ ... Thanks

Groundspeak's price doesn't include the exchange rate for us Canadians, I guess.

You're not upgrading any app. It's the membership that costs $29.99 US. Apps and membership are two completely separate critters.

Thanks for the reply,I already downloaded what i think is the newest free app from Groundspeak, I think the paid intro app is the older one?? right? Im just wondering if i up grade to premium membership will the phone app recognize my login as premium? Thanks.. Ps. i do have a real good GPS, but i dont always have it with me, like i do my iphone. So this is another question . is there much difference in finding a cache with a iphone6 verses a GPS ? Thanks

The paid app is the old one. The free app is the new one.

You can geocache fine without a premium membership. But if you get the membership you get some benefits. Instant notifications. The ability to place and view PMO caches. Pocket queries (searching for caches based on certain preferences, and the ability to to load tons of caches to a GPS at one times.)

Yes of course using a phone will be different than a GPS. Advantage of a phone include up to the second info, where a GPS is only as uo to date as the time you loaded the caches into it. That also means it's great for random caching. You also get more functionality on the free app.

Advantages of a GPS is that they get better battery life, and you can just change out batteries if you need. Also you can hold tons of caches more easily than on a phone (which is generally connected and n using data while caching) by using pocket queries every week to keep it relatively uo to date. There are other pros and cons for each.

Some gps can give you sattelite view maps, and you can get to po maps which are great for in the mountains for example.

Which is better? That's something you have to decide for your particular needs.

And for the record you are currently a premium member. Don't know if you did it or if someone gifted it to you (if so it wasn't me)

Important to note about the free/new app:

  • If you are a Basic Member, then you'll only be able to see non-PMO Traditional caches with a D/T rating of 1.5/1.5 or less.
  • If you are a Premium Member, then you'll be able to see all caches.

Basic Members can still see all non-PMO caches via the website. So, if you wanted to search for a Multi cache or an Earthcache or a tougher Traditional cache, then you'd have to use the website and load those caches to your GPSr one-by-one (since PQ's are not available to Basic Members) or print out the cache info and load the coords into your GPSr one-by-one.

If you purchase a Premium Membership, then you'll want to log out and then log in to the Geocaching app so that it recognizes the change in your membership status.

i can't imagine using a standalone gps, given how good the user interface and applications are on ios and android. offline mapping is pretty awesome, and offline caching, similar.

If you were a PM in the past, and the PM lapsed, the forum does not change that unless a moderator steps in. The forum software does not sync up with the website software.

So, if your PM lapsed in the past, the forum would still show you as PM, but your profile would show you as a basic member.

You paid for the PM during the time between posts by cerberus1 and T.D.M.22.

Given the wildly inaccurate coordinates I've seen on caches that were hidden using phones (including iPhones), I can't imagine not using a stand alone GPSr. But that's another debate for another time.

How's your battery life on your phone? My GPS lasts all day on one charge.

I've only cached with two people who use phones so it's a limited sample, but both of them experienced much slower response times than my GPS. They would be walking off in the wrong direction at first, have to turn back and then overshoot the GZ and turn back again. Yeah, they'd finally get there, but by then I'd usually have already found the cache and be ready to go on to the next one.

We use both..the phone to get us somewhat close...especially when driving for in town ones, and the gps to get us there. The phone app would jump around a lot when we got close...or you had to stop for a bit to let it "stabilize"/catch up. The gps wakes it so much better. Just wish my wife would let me play with it also. She has kind of "claimed" it as hers.

Whenever I actually plan to go geocaching I use a GPSr and whenever I'm just out and a cache happens to be nearby a phone works good enough. A GPSr definitely feels like a smoother experience than my phone and I'm not afraid of breaking my GPSr while caching. Also after seeing the accuracy of coordinates of newbies placing caches with phones, I don't even want to try full time caching with a phone

I am a paid member downloaded and paid for the app last year. Seams to work fine. I've noticed that this app is no longer available at the App Store, will is expire or will it continue to be usable. The app on the iphone 5S works great not sure how much better it would be with a HH
